Best. Historical. Marker. Ever.
So I went through Indio, California over the weekend.

Upon arriving in town, my first stop was a sobriety checkpoint.

Officer: "Have you had any alcohol tonight?"

Me: "No."

Officer: (Incredulous) "You've had nothing to drink tonight?"

Me: "Yeah, it's a bummer."

Officer: (Laughs) "Don't drink and drive."

He then waved me through.

After that exchange, I decided there was only one thing to do: check into a hotel and get some booze.

I went to the Motel 6 and checked in. I then walked across the street to Clark's Travel Stop. When I walked in the door I was greeted by a wall of photos taken by the security camera of people who were not allowed in the store. Most of them were not allowed in the store due to a history of theft from the store. Many of the photos were of the people caught in the act of stealing from the store. Good times.

I made my way over to the beer case and selected a 6 pack of Negro Modelo, 'cause the feeling was right. There was a sign posed above the beer case saying that I should smile, because there was a camera pointed at me that was being monitored by the Indio police department. I'm familiar with security cameras in stores, but is it a common practice for the security camera to go directly to the police station?

I went to the counter and bought my beer. The counter, natch, had a sliding panel of bulletproof glass.

After making my purchase I walked out past the height strip and I was going to return to my hotel, when some strange impulse prompted me to turn around.

Next to the front door of the liquor store was a brass historical marker. It read, simply,

"On this site on October 11, 1991, the Reverend Jimmy Swaggart picked up a "date."

6. LOL
They should immortalize all deviant behaviors of the "Moral Majority" like that. But then again the supply of brass would soon run out.

11 Oct 1991 Police in Indio, CA arrest televangelist Jimmy Swaggart in a red-light district for driving on the wrong side of the road. Swaggart's passenger is avowed prostitute Rosemary Garcia.
