Here is a simple but effective strategy that every Democrat can master...
Every Republican seems to have gotten into the habit of saying the "Democrat Party". As if they have some aversion to the word, "democratic". Every time one of them utters the words, "Democrat Party", they should be called on it. Just a simple but polite reminder to them that it is the "Democratic Party" and has been so since the 1820's. Ask them why they continue to "misspeak" in such a way??

This will have the effect of putting them on the defensive and should make them think twice before saying something totally ridiculous. It is a simple strategy but could be very effective and could be a great plus for the Democrats, in my opinion.

2. That won't work

"Republic" does have a bad connotation. But when you say "Democrat Party" it rhymes with "bureaucrat" and erases the concept of us as a democratic group.
But yeah, calling them out on it helps. I got into a conversation with a College Repub the other day about the upcoming election, and he threw the term out there. I responded by pointing out the bullshit use of that comment, and his response was a "you say tomay-to, I say tomoto" kind of response.

3. Or We Could Just Say.... Well, I'll Take That Democrat Party...
And raise you one RepubliCANT Party! But then I would add, it's actually the Democratic Party just in case they we never taught the correct usage!!

I might even go further to point out ANOTHER word that get bungled all the time which is "irregardless!" Like you know, there is no such word as irregardless, even though I hear it on TV all the time too! The correct usage is "regardless" no matter what!!

Oh, I just couldn't help myself1 I really MUST get to bed, Alka-Seltzer Cold Plus kicking in!!!

4. What would Truman do?

The recent controversy over the Republicans’ attempt to label the Democratic Party as the “Democrat Party” has a precedent.

After he left the presidency, Harry S. Truman was asked by newsman and friend Randall Jessee what he thought about the Republican National Committee’s efforts to rebrand the Democrats in this way. The former president replied:, “Well, I think that’s all right, under one condition: If they’ll make a trade with us and let us call the Republican Party the Publican Party.”

He then made a comment about how in the Bible the publicans and big-money boys didn’t come off too well.

Earlier, in the 1948 campaign, Truman referred to the Republican Party as “the party of special privilege” and one that tried to hide the truth about itself from the American people. To those who might doubt that, he assured them: “The leopard has not changed his spots. He has merely hired some public relations experts.”

Finally, this brouhaha might also remind us of another Truman maxim: “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.”

6. Perfect!!!
Thank you for that post and information. Leave it to Harry to have the perfect answer!

I hereby renounce my use of "reTHUG" and adopt the use of "Publican" per Give-em-Hell Harry -- and I'll tell everyone exactly why!

7. Unfortunately, few people know what a "publican" is...
with kind regards to Harry...

8. Then they're about to learn.
And I'll remind them to thank Harry for the free contribution to their (biblical) education!

9. Good luck...
I think it would be more effective to simply call them on it on the spot. We've had a lot of posts here about "framing" the issues, etc. To simply respond to a nickname with a nickname of your own is the wrong way to "frame" it. That is reactive. To correct a mistake or intentional error is another matter...

10. We can't do both?
I've been pointing out forever that "Democrat Party" is grammatically incorrect and makes the person who says it look juvenile and uneducated.

I think if at the same time we add the conditional use of "Publican Party" as an alternative in exchange, the way Truman expressed it, we've corrected and educated them all at once.

Then, if they still persist in using "Democrat Party," they'll look even more petty and stupid than usual -- and best yet, they'll know it.

11. I think it is important that they be called on it...
Personally, I think it is more effective if you politely correct them, but that's just my opinion.

12. I'm not disagreeing with you.
And I strongly agree that it is very important that they be called on it each and every time. I'm think I'm just adding a bit more of the "why" the dialogue.

:)

5. I think they should be called on it every time they say it...
and explain that they have it wrong - either on purpose or out of ignorance. Why do you hate the word "democratic"? But always call them on it. It may seem like a small matter but it is much bigger than it seems..
