Steve Irwin Quotes
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 06:48 PM by Holly_Hobby
Because when they strike it can be that quick that if they're within range, you're dead, you're dead in your tracks. And his head weighs more than my body so it's WHACK!
Steve Irwin

But I put my life on the line to save animals.
Steve Irwin

Crikey means gee whiz, wow!
Steve Irwin

Crikey, mate. You're far safer dealing with crocodiles and western diamondback rattlesnakes than the executives and the producers and all those sharks in the big MGM building.
Steve Irwin

Every cent we earn from Crocodile Hunter goes straight back into conservation. Every single cent.
Steve Irwin

Herein lies our problem. If we level that much land to grow rice and whatever, then no other animal could live there except for some insect pest species. Which is very unfortunate.
Steve Irwin

I am optimistic globally. So many scientists are working frantically on the reparation of our planet.
Steve Irwin

I believe our biggest issue is the same biggest issue that the whole world is facing, and that's habitat destruction.
Steve Irwin

I believe sustainable use is the greatest propaganda in wildlife conservation at the moment.
Steve Irwin

I believe that education is all about being excited about something. Seeing passion and enthusiasm helps push an educational message.
Steve Irwin

I bled a lot. I got hit across the face. We couldn't film for seven days. I got hit, whacked, underwater, across the face. I finished the shot, got into the boat and blood started coming out.
Steve Irwin

I get called an adrenaline junkie every other minute, and I'm just fine with that.
Steve Irwin

I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.
Steve Irwin

I mean, these are all just little pink bits here (pointing at his arm) and are just curing up now. I've been recently filming a nine-and-a-half-foot female crocodile I had to catch. Oh, man, she bit me up! That was a mistake.
Steve Irwin

I sincerely believe that there's room for cutting down trees for forestry and grazing, so as we all get to eat. Everyone has to compromise.
Steve Irwin

I'm a proud Australian, a very, very proud Australian.
Steve Irwin

I've probably saved thousands of peoples' lives with my educational message on snake bites, how to get in around venomous anything.
Steve Irwin

My belief is that what comes across on the television is a capture of my enthusiasm and my passion for wildlife.
Steve Irwin

My dad taught me from my youngest childhood memories through these connections with Aboriginal and tribal people that you must always protect people's sacred status, regardless of the pest.
Steve Irwin

My field is with apex predators, hence your crocodiles, your snakes, your spiders.
Steve Irwin

No matter where you go and what you do in America, you turn the tele on and you're confronted with violence.
Steve Irwin

No, snakes are no problem. I'd go to any country, anywhere, any snakes, not a problem.
Steve Irwin

See, I've always seen Jacques Cousteau as a hero, mate. He's a legend - like my dad, just a legend. And so what he did for conservation in the '60s through the '70s was just phenomenal.
Steve Irwin

Sharks, I've been self-trained as well, and crocodiles, naturally. I've been catching them since I was nine. No problem.
Steve Irwin

Since I was a boy, from this house, I was out rescuing crocodiles and snakes. My mum and dad were very passionate about that and, I was lucky enough to go along.
Steve Irwin

Snakes are just very instinctive to me. I've been playing with snakes since before I could walk. It doesn't matter where or what it is, from the biggest to the most venomous.
Steve Irwin

So fear helps me from making mistakes, but I make lot of mistakes.
Steve Irwin

So now what happens is the cameras follow me around and capture exactly what I've been doing since I was a boy. Only now we have a team of, you know, like 73 of us, and it's gone beyond that.
Steve Irwin

So, my tactic with conservation of apex predators is to get people excited and take them to where they live.
Steve Irwin

Take the crocodile, for example, my favorite animal. There are 23 species. Seventeen of those species are rare or endangered. They're on the way out, no matter what anyone does or says, you know.
Steve Irwin

That might have a lot to do with it, but you know, I probably don't show fear, but I suffer from fear like everyone else.
Steve Irwin

The first crocodile I ever caught was at nine years of age, and it was a rescue.
Steve Irwin

The only animals I'm not comfortable with are parrots, but I'm learning as I go. I'm getting better and better at 'em. I really am.
Steve Irwin

There's a lot of research behind the scenes that you don't get to see, but I have an instinct that my dad nurtured from when I was born. I was very lucky then.
Steve Irwin

We've evolved from sitting back on our tripods and shooting wildlife films like they have been shot historically, which doesn't work for us.
Steve Irwin

When I talk to the camera, mate, it's not like I'm talking to the camera, I'm talking to you because I want to whip you around and plunk you right there with me.
Steve Irwin

When the East Timor conflict broke out, when they gained independence, the militia killed a lot of East Timorese people. And their sacred totem is the crocodile. They believe that their island is actually a solidified crocodile, so it has sacred status.
Steve Irwin

Where I live if someone gives you a hug it's from the heart.
Steve Irwin

Yeah, for some reason parrots have to bite me. That's their job. I don't know why that is. They've nearly torn my nose off. I've had some really bad parrot bites.
Steve Irwin

Yeah, I think it's an absolute disaster that Australia, the government, allowed kangaroo culling.
Steve Irwin

Yeah, I'm a thrill seeker, but crikey, education's the most important thing.
Steve Irwin

You know, I'm Australian, and we have got the worst sense of humor. We are cruel to each other.
Steve Irwin

You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it'll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it's not even funny.
Steve Irwin

46. There appear to be thousands of green parrots on the loose
here in the city of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). It's a relatively new phenomenom. You see them close to where the pigeons congregate: up in the trees, roosting, or down on the ground, feeding or just hanging around.

I notice that, while the two species are more-or-less 'intermingled', the pigeons seem to maintain a certain distance, treating the parrots with a considerable degree of respect.

"In front of us right now is the greatest leader Australia has ever had and the greatest leader in the world." -- Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, on John Howard

He also loved Bush and ragged on Kerry during the 2004 campaign.

... have to do with anything?

Jesus, not everything in life is about Iraq. I certainly doubt Steve Irwin sat around obsessing about it and basing his political views and personal opinions around it.

62. Nothing of course you know how much more important animals are
than those tiny adorable creatures we call babies.

Supporting a government and it's leader that condones an illegal war is probably not really all that important.

Just remember that next time you get fired up about some celebrity supporting Bush.

Perhaps you should look at how Irwin really loved animals.

"In 2004, Irwin was accused of illegally encroaching on the space of penguins, seals and humpback whales in Antarctica, where he was filming a documentary called Ice Breaker. An investigation by the Australian Environmental Department resulted in no action being taken, which is not surprising seeing that John Howard, the prime minister, made sure that Irwin was one of the guests invited to a "gala barbecue" for George Bush a few months before. Howard is now Irwin's chief mourner, which is only fair, seeing that Irwin announced that Howard is the greatest leader the world has ever seen."

But hey you know he was on tv so he must have been a great guy.

23. I agree with you. His attitude is let the indigenous people starve while
the animals flourish. This short sighted policy only adds to the depredation of environments while indigenous humans try to provide for themselves and their families. I liked watching him on tv but his ideas were not in anyway groundbreaking

63. Of course not because you don't want to believe it. That's understandable
Crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has put the bite into plans to allow crocodile hunting safaris in the Northern Territory.

Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information laws by News Ltd newspapers show that in April last year, the government was strongly considering allowing the safaris if it was safe, sustainable and humane.

The documents indicated the federal government had even gone to the extent of drawing up legal documents to make the move official.

But in May last year, Mr Irwin wrote to Environment Minister Ian Campbell opposing the move, and in August took Senator Campbell on a personal tour of Cape York to see crocodiles in the wild.

By October, Senator Campbell had shelved plans to allow 25 of 600 problem crocs to be shot each year by wealthy tourists, News Ltd said.

Mr Irwin's intervention has angered many in the NT.

Territory Environment Minister Marion Scrymgour said the hunting safaris would have been a huge boost for Aboriginal communities and pastoralists.

"Aboriginal economic enterprises and pastoralists are being held to ransom by a Queensland theme park operator," she told the Australian.

Mr Irwin's Australia Zoo did not respond to requests for comment.

29. it sounds like something Irwin would have said about anyone
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 01:38 AM by JI7
i'm basing this on the way Irwin usually spoke. i can easily imagine if he were to meet Bill Clinton he would say something similar.

it's just so full of exaggeration which is how he often spoke, but also one of the reasons people loved to watch him. i mean, even those supportive of John Howard would most likely not call him "the greatest leader in the world".

i haven't read any quotes from him concerning Bush and Kerry. it seems people use the JH quotes to claim he had an opinion on American Politics. personally, i don't think he was all that informed about politics outside of his own personal interest which was animals, conservation, etc.

Steve Irwin defends quarantine ad
PM - Tuesday, 4 November , 2003 18:42:00
Reporter: Louise Willis

MARK COLVIN: The 'crocodile-hunter', Steve Irwin, has declared himself good value for money, after revelations that he got $175,000 worth of taxpayers' money to appear in a television advertisement. The Federal Government paid Irwin for one day's filming for the quarantine commercials.
The Labor Party's Agriculture Spokesman Kerry O'Brien is now asking whether the deal prompted Steve Irwin's recent declaration that John Howard was the greatest leader Australia had ever had.
But Steve Irwin denies he's in the Government's pocket, and points out that he used his fee to help protect endangered animals.
The khaki-clad adventurer spoke to Louise Willis in Brisbane.

<snip>
LOUISE WILLIS: Is there a link between you doing these ads and the fact that you've been praising John Howard recently?

STEVE IRWIN: No. That's the craziest thing I've ever heard – absolutely no link. That's like asking if an eagle can mate with a budgerigar.

I think what's happened… here's what's happened – I love John Howard, and that's the way I am. So everyone thinks I'm, like, this die-hard Liberal supporter. I'm not! I'm not. I'm sitting on the fence, mate, I'm a conservationist. I can't afford to be one way or the other. I just have to run straight up the middle, mate. I have to get on with whoever's in power.

And to tell you the truth, the best speech that popped up in Parliament House when George Bush was here was Simon Crean. Here's a bloke who actually disagreed with Iraq, okay, so he put forward the most eloquent speech, which really boosted his profile in my eyes. By crikey, I thought, Simon did the best one there, which is fantastic. So I appreciate good work when I see it, and that's all it is.

But what's behind this – the motivating factor is the Labor guys like Kerry unfortunately they think that I'm some staunch Liberal supporter and there's some deals going on, well, there isn't. I mean, he's missed the mark.
<snip>
STEVE IRWIN: I was invited to the George Bush barbecue just like John Eales and Lleyton Hewitt because I'm an Australian who's out there, who's achieving conservation, probably greater than any other Australian currently. And George Bush loved Croc Hunter, you know? He said, wow, it's really good to meet you, you're a great conservationist, keep up the good work, and stuff.

32. thank you, and i remember that Simon Crean speech
and i was totally hooked on it, one of the best things i saw , especially around that time when the world was debating what to do in Iraq.

and this pretty much is in line with what i thought about Irwin and his political views. as you say, it's mostly apolitical. but he is a nice guy who probably gets along with everyone when it comes to the issues important to him. i doubt if he ever met Bush or any other politician he would discuss abortion, taxes , Iraq.

i also don't get the comparisons to him and Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Reagan etc. even assuming he had political views, that certainly wasn't what his public profile was based on . people knew him as the Croc Hunter, the animal lover etc. and those who mourn him do so because of that.

34. Yeah, the guy admits he did the commercial for the money
and that he likes to stay on the side of whoever is in power, for the sake of his work. Hell, he was happy to go to the Bush BBQ because Shrub was a fan of him and honestly if you read the whole thing, it seems like he was mostly excited about the food at the BBQ. Perhaps that's why Bush likes him. They both enjoy a good BBQ.

I don't even know how anyone could have considered him a rabid right winger when he's a conservationist. And I don't expect some Australian guy to really care about American politics. I don't really pay much attention to Australian politics and I'm sure neither do most Americans.

I'm sorry. This is probably the quote that's inspiring the vitriole - Irwin refers to "Labor guys like Kerry" in a 2003 interview & people jumped to the assumption that he was slamming John Kerry. He's actually referring to Australian Labor Party Agriculture Spokesman Kerry O'Brien, as the interview makes clear. It's got nothing to do w/Bush, Kerry or the US 2004 election.

64. You know it's peculiar that people love people who love animals no matter
who they are or what they do. I'm with you look at the stuff people wrote when I pointed out the same thing you did.

28. Thanks for the wonderful tribute.
:hi:

I always enjoyed watching his shows. This collection of quotes really puts his life in the proper context. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news this morning.

RIP Steve Irwin.

30. He gave us the frog's message
a warning to us all. Steve loved our planet and all it's creatures, he understood them.

Mother Earth has lost a good friend and protector.

36. thank you
i find i am crying, again. the loss of such a passionate and caring man is difficult to accept. i cry for his family, whom i have watched grow-up on the tele. i cry for our future, my son's future, on this planet we call home.

i cry also because this Man has been vilified and slandered...

good people are not perfect,
but they try harder than most.

40. My favorite thing about him was...
.. he would pick up the silliest little lizard or bug or whatever and Have-a-look-at-her! like it was the most amazing creature on the planet.

:(

Yesterday my excitement and small tribute was to climb a ladder and photograph this spider:

I doubt that I could live a dozen lifetimes and live as much as Irwin did, or love the creatures as much. Still, I'll give it a go...

48. Some more about Steve Irwin
According to an acquaitance from Australia, a signficant amount of the money produced by Irwin's shows was used to purchase parcels of land all over the world to protect natural habitat of widelife In addition, the Australia Zoo with which Irwin was associated has the largest animal hospital in Australia and Irwin was responsible for the establishment of the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, International Crocodile Rescue, and the Australian Wildlife Hospital. His conservation work involved not only crocs, but also included noteworthy contributions to the preservation of many other endangered species, including koalas and wombats.

60. The heck with all the haters. He was a caring environmentalist
above all. He used his celebrity to further his causes, and they weren't political! One thing all this has done is deepen my respect for the man and mourn his loss all the more. If only the people slamming him had 1/1000 of his heart... well they wouldn't be slammnin' him I guess! :)

56. All time favorite segment
he was holding a croc and talking to the camera. As he's telling us about it, he casually reaches under her belly between her two back legs to keep her from squirming loose. Mid sentence, he interupts himself with "oh, she's a female!" and then goes on with what he was originally saying.

My 8 year old son (at the time) literally fell over himself laughing. We still quote him on that sometimes.
