Voters not sold on push to end affirmative action
Detroit Free Press
September 4, 2006

Support for the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative -- the proposal to prohibit the use of affirmative action in government hiring and contracting and university admissions -- remains tentative, the latest Free Press-Local 4 poll shows.

As the campaigns for and against the proposal enter the final two months, the ban was supported by 41% of likely voters, down from 43% in mid-July. Opposition to the ban also fell, from 48% to 43%.

Sixteen percent of voters were undecided in the latest survey, conducted last week by Selzer & Co. Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa. The poll surveyed 803 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

It was favored by 52% of the people who said they were Republicans, but trailed among Democrats -- 34% in favor and 52% opposed. Independents also rejected the proposal with 37% in favor and 49% opposed.

4. We need to confront them and hand them their asses every single time
they try this sh!t.

Because they're not gonna stop unless we stop them. It's their hobby on their days off from bilking the Treasury. It's how they keep their wackjob base fired up.

5. People got lazy along the way
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 05:54 PM by Ninten12
As a result of that laziness, there was no longer a desire to make sure that all are treated and considered equally in the workplace. Quotas don't work because it is the ultimate lazy way out.

There will always be preferential treatment for those not qualified. JUST LOOK AT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT! I am a sub-contractor and have had no luck trying to become a worker for the government directly. It's all the wives, son-in-laws and retirees that get the gig... Even though they are not qualified to scrub a toilet!

I have found that being smart, educated and black still means that you will lose the job to a dumb white person. They are the friends and relatives of the folks in charge.

6. Welcome to DU, Ninten12. Do you think so? My thinking is different.
I think the Republicans know they can divide us and stir up their creepy base by starting these initiatives.

Bigotry of all kinds works for them because they scoot together the haters and the fearful.

Their "Southern Strategy" has become their national strategy. Something that no decent person could imagine. And that's how they get us -- by doing stuff that is so horrendous that we don't see it coming, imho.
