Harry Belafonte calls Bush the greatest terrorist in the world.
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 06:23 PM by Cleita
NEW YORK - Entertainer Harry Belafonte, one of the Bush administration's harshest critics, compared the Homeland Security Department to the Nazi Gestapo on Saturday and attacked the president as a liar.

We've come to this dark time in which the new Gestapo of Homeland Security lurks here, where citizens are having their rights suspended," Belafonte said in a speech to the annual meeting of the Arts Presenters Members Conference.

"You can be arrested and not charged. You can be arrested and have no right to counsel," said Belafonte.

Belafonte's remarks on Saturday — part of a 45-minute speech on the role of the arts in a politically changing world — were greeted with a roaring standing ovation from an audience which included singer Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, and members of the arts community from several dozen countries.

2. And as much as it hurts--being American--Belafonte's right.
I know that a lot of Americans--including independents and even democrats--cringe when they hear Belafonte's words, but we need a wake-up call, and good slap in the face works miracles!

Bush is the greatest terrorist in the world simply because he's got command over the greatest military in the world.

It's as if America has put a hand grenade in the hands of a 4 year old child with older, somewhat "smarter" kids dancing around him screaming "Pull! Pull! PULL!"

4. Remember, it's Bush that is dishonoring the Office,
not Harry or you or me for calling him on that.

11. Bush is dishonoring the Office; He's dishonoring America...
...and that's the only thing that helps me "cringe" less when I heard, and hear Harry Belafonte's passionate speech.

And I agree...Bush needs to be called on it, because he not Belafonte is what's wrong with America today.

<big relieved smile>

Feel better now. :D

3. Thank you, Cleita, and thank you Harry
One of my favorite experiences being in show busyness is, I found a great bannana bunch tie clip for Doug. Clowns, comics, bannanas, natch.

Once, gigging in Reno, Harry was there, and Doug gave him the tie clip as a little offering from us both.

Thank you, sir. :)

13. He's about right
And I'll admit that I know keep in the back of my mind, even as I type these words, what critical government employees would think of my ideas. I'm tempted to just get the hell out of America.

16. Unfortunately...
....Harry's comments will just be used as fodder for the right-wing media. They'll latch onto it like a pit bull, blow it out of proportion and it'll end up being another propaganda piece for the repugs. They won't examine the point of his statement, they'll just see "Bush" and "Nazi". How dare he compare a facist to a facist!!!

20. I'm afraid you're right, Phoon
Watch for Harry's comments to make the rounds of the talking-head shows on Sunday--"Question: Will HB's OTT comments help or hurt the Dems cause? Has he gone to far?" Blah, blah blah. Once again, the messenger rather than the message will be the subject of debate in the Corp. Media. SG

21. He speaks the truth, though, and he got a standing ovation. Many people
feel the way he feels, but are afraid to say it out loud. Now that it's out there, it will give others the courage to do so. And the more it's heard, and the more support he gets for leading the way, for saying what needed to be said, the less it matters what those who support the King in the WH, have to say. The more who speak up the less relevant they become. Soon they will be drowned out.

I used to be horrified by their viciousness. I was shocked that such people existed in this country. Now, I just laugh at them, as do most other people I know. They are losing the power which was based only on the fact that we were not used to such vitriol. Now it's old hat.

So old Michelle (concentration camp) Malkin is blathering about a man whose shoes she is not fit to shine. So what, don't even pay any attention to her ravings. I doubt he'll even know she exists. As for the big, scary Freepers, their numbers are dwindling day by day. Soon, they will go back to their little, mean, sad, hate-filled lives, their 15 minutes of relevance, over, just like all the other brownshirt types before them.

They were able to get away with their bullying right after 9/11 but not anymore. WE ARE IN THE MAJORITY NOW! I wish it had happened sooner, but better late than never.

So, thank you Harry ~

As Molly Ivens said ~ if they dare to use the word traitor, go after them like a snarling dog. This is all they understand.

22. Very well said, Catrina
"They are losing the power which was based only on the fact that we were not used to such vitriol."

I think millions were caught on the back foot (and momentarily paralyzed) by the sheer level of hate rhetoric, unprecedented in public discourse, at least in my lifetime. SG

18. Belafonte - much more than just an entertainer - humanitarian, activist
Know your champions - a bit of research I did on another thread impugning his credibility:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Belafonte
In 1987, he received an appointment to UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador. In 2002 Africare awarded him the Bishop John T. Walker Distinuished Humanitarian Service Award for his efforts to assist Africa.
also, from UNICEF

Both the Peace Corps and UNICEF have honored Belafonte's work.
