Are you ready - Convert to Islam, Qaeda tells non-Muslims in America...
'DUBAI • Al Qaeda called on US President George W Bush and non-Muslims especially in the United States to convert to Islam and abandon their 'misguided' ways or else suffer the consequences, according to a video posted on a Web site yesterday.

The speaker was identified as Azzam the American, also known as Adam Yahiye Gadahn - an Islamic convert from California wanted for questioning by the FBI and who US authorities believe to be involved in a "propaganda" campaign for Al Qaeda.

"If the Zionist crusader missionaries of hate and counter-Islam consultants like... the crusader and chief George W Bush were to abandon their unbelief and repent and enter into the light of Islam and turn their swords against the enemies of God, it would be accepted of them and they would be our brothers in Islam," Gadahn said in English.'

If we didn't bomb them into accepting our way of life or install puppet governments around the world... they wouldn't be "advising" us to convert to Islam.

Where would these terrorists be if our foreign policy didn't provide them with all the converts they wanted? Maybe our foreign policy should include adherence to the golden rule.

29. I'm trying to find the part where Azzam the American discusses...
...how some of his "brothers in Islam" are slaughtering some of his OTHER "brothers" by the trainload. Slaughtering innocent women and children and you can kiss my beautiful misguided ass, "Azzam."

Suffer the consequences? Getting blown into bloody tapioca pudding by a car bomb on the way to the local market sounds like "suffering" to me. He wants to make us suffer like his "brothers?"

I do wish that George W. Bush would "abandon his unbelief and repent," though...and it doesn't have a damned thing to do with "Azzam The Asshole's" brand of "Islam." It has to do with calling himself a "Christian" primarily because it plays well in the red states.

This kind of crap makes it pathetically easy for junior to step up with another one of his "Boogeyman" speeches.

"Azzam The American can run, but he cannot hide. We have a poster from the old west, y'all: he's wanted, dead or alive. We will smoke him out of his cave..."

He may be on "a propaganda campaign for al Quaeda," but he's also lending support to Team Rove. Maybe "Azzam" IS Rove.

the religious right is whacky enough for me.

I live in rural NC. There was a 3 week..THREE WEEK...tent revival in my county that drew 50K people! OMFG!! They gathered to hear a lunatic named Rev. Ralph Sexton preach about Satan and Islam (and homosexuals, and sin and hell and fire and damnation and salvation and that'll be $50 bucks).

We went to see Matthew Fox in Asheville and there were like 200 people.

The contrast was INCREDIBLE.

My friend said, the people at the tent revival were looking for answers and they got them.

The people at the Matthew Fox presentation were asking questions.

69. No, that's not fair to Christianity.
I strongly dislike Christianity, but it's nowhere near as unpleasant as Islam by most measures (which is not to say there are not forms of Christianity worse than many forms of Islam).

On women's rights, gay rights, religious tolerance, freedom of speech, separation of church and state, war and peace, crime and punishment, and most other issues, most forms of Islam make most forms of Christianity look very pleasant indeed.

The reason a lot of liberal Americans share your views is because distance makes perspective and objectivity difficult - they're very used to arguing with conservative Christians, and hence when they see those same conservative Christians attacking conservative Islam they assume that the enemy of my enemy must be my friend, but it really isn't: Islam is the most unpleasant of the major world religions by a considerable margin.

Incidentally, to forestall a counterargument I often see when I point this out, when I'm talking about Islam and Christianity and other religions, I mean "as practiced by their believers", not "in some platonic form".

Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 12:41 PM by ComerPerro
the reason Christianity appears to be more tolerant is because in the West, we don't let religion control government. Therefore, misogynistic Christian assholes can't force their agenda on people as easily.

The Old Testament doesn't treat women with much respect at all, and I assure you that if this country was founded on the Theocracy that the fundies want, women and minorities and non-Christians would be treated very poorly.

The way we treat women and non-Christians has nothing to do with any greatness of Christianity.

You can thank secularism for that.

75. Some points:
:-The Old Testament doesn't treat women with much respect at all.

That most of the instructions in the OT are no longer binding is one of the most important parts of the New Testament. Read http://www.aslan.demon.co.uk/gaybishops.htm especially section 5. The NT's attitude to women is far from progressive, but it's nothing like as bad as either the OT or the Qu'ran; the attitudes of most actual Christians are more progressive than those of either the NT or those of most actual Muslims. See my final comment about actual beliefs, not Platonic forms; note also that even the OT is less mysogynistic than the Qu'ran (although you may wish to argue that there is no settling the precedency between a louse and a flea).

:- I assure you that if this country was founded on the Theocracy that the fundies want, women and minorities and non-Christians would be treated very poorly.

One of the differences between Islam and Christianity is that very few Christians want to live in a theocracy, whereas a relatively high proportion (I'm ashamed to say I can't quote figures) of Muslims do. Note again my comment about actual beliefs as opposed to notional platonic forms.

:-The way we treat women and non-Christians has nothing to do with any greatness of Christianity.

An overstatement (although I wouldn't refer to "less mysogynistic than Islam" as a sign of "greatness"): the treatment of women even in e.g. 17th century Europe, or indeed in almost any large Christian society ever (although there have been sects that have been as mysogynistic as anyone could wish for) was far better than it is in many Islamic societies today. Note, however, that Christianity was in the first place responsible for the (massive) inequality that did exist under it, and that it was a matter of it getting less bad rather than of it actively promoting women's rights. My claim is merely that it is (much) less anti-women's rights than Islam, not that it is pro women's rights.

:-You can thank secularism for that.

Not secularism itself, by most definitions - atheists have never wielded much social influence - but the Enlightenment that lead inevitably to secularism. But don't forget that most of the champions of the Enlightenment were Christians, albeit less devout or orthodox ones than their contemporaries. Note also that the change in the status of women is much more clearly modelled as *less* oppression than as *more* women's rights.

So no, it's not bullshit at all. Christians in the past, and still more in the present, have on average interpreted their religion as being much less mysogynistic than Muslims have.

and get mad at me for lumping all Christians in with Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and George W Bush (admit it, they are your most vocal leaders),

then maybe first you should stop lumping Islam all together with the extremists.

78. Please actually read what I said.

I've been explicitly *avoiding* talking about "True Christians"; *you're* the one who's been doing so by talking about the contents of the OT while I've been very explicit that what I mean by Christianity is what Christians (by which I mean "people identified by most people as Christians", not "people who live in a way I think Christ would have approved of" or similar) believe, rather than some "true" form.

I've been careful to use phrases such as "on average" when necessary to make it clear that I am not lumping all Christians or all Muslims together; if I've failed to do so at any point I apologise, but it's not through want of trying.

You're "your" is completely misplaced - I'm an atheist. I would (I hope) be considerably more circumspect about comparing Christianity and Islam if I were a Christian or a Muslim than I am from a position where I have at least the potential to try and be objective.

The claim that Phelps is a Christian leader is utterly ludicrous and makes me worry about how hard you're trying to be objective; Bush is a leader and a Christian but clearly not a Christian leader; I'm not sure about Robertson and Falwell, not being an American - they are mostly unknown here in the UK. If I wanted examples of Christian leaders I'd go with Rowan Atkinson (whose views on women's rights are fairly progressive) and with the Pope (who, while far from a feminist, is still a hell of a lot better than most Muslim leaders on women's rights).

I am not "lumping all Islam together with the extremists", alas. The sad fact is that there are whole Islamic countries where the majority of the population holds views which you and I would consider mysogynistic.

87. Another point of order - "atheist" does not equal "secular".
It's a common mistake, but the fact that most believers here are for separation of church and state shows that secularism is not limited to atheists - as supported by your contention that believers linked to the Enlightenment led to secularism.

Most believers, thankfully, are also secularists.

62. Not a good sign
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 07:19 AM by MadHound
Traditionally it is neccessary for the Islamic warrior to offer his opponent an oppotunity to convert to Islam before attacking. bin Laden didn't do this on 911, but apparently he has been paying attention to such details now. He even acquired a fatwah against the US a while back. Now an Al-Qaeda spokesman is offering up the conversion to Islam.

I think that things are going to get ugly again, soon:shrug:

Convert your government to a democracy, seperate your church and state, give equal rights to women, and do some other shit I think you should do - or, to quote your own drivel - "either repent (your) misguided ways and enter into the light of truth or keep your poison to yourself and suffer the consequences in this world and the next."

Don't make me come overe there boy and whoop your ass.

80. Consider what is likely to happen to Europe though, Islamification by def
default. The birth rate in Italy and other European countries is falling. People are not replicating themselves. But the immigrants in those countries have more children. If more Muslims are born than Germans, French, Italians, then they will be in the majority.

There are several books on the subject

Books : Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis,Author Bat Yeor
Publication Date: January 31, 2005
Publisher: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sad But True
In a few decades muslims will turn Western Europe into an islamic continent. This book goes into detail explaining why this is happening and how. The peoples of Europe deserve what ever happens to them for allowing millions of a foreign and unassailable people move into their home land. This book doesn't leave much room for optimism either. I recommend this book if you have an interest in the future of Europe or the Western World.

85. It's not a view worth taking seriously.
Theses based on linear extrapolation almost never are. The assumption that, for example, since the Muslim population of Britain is *currently* increasing by X per year and the non-Muslim population by only Y per year then there will be more Muslims than non-Muslims in Britain by (N-M)/(X-Y) is bullshit of the first order.

There are many good reasons to dislike Islam, but that it is going to take over Europe is not one of them.

88. Considering no one is born Muslim (or any other religion)...
...that's kind of a flawed premise.

And, of course, Arab children do not universally grow up to be Muslim any more than children in the U.S. grow up to be Christian (though in many Arab countries there are admittedly more official pressures to become Muslim).

Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 07:38 PM by SmokingJacket
Did this practice of making crazy threatening videos just spontaneously occur during the Bush era?

If so, why?

If not, why didn't we see them during the Clinton era? Could it be they existed but no one thought they needed to be broadcast?

If Gadahn is in fact involved in a propaganda campaign for Al Qaeda, why are we letting him plaster his face all over the TV? Why are we helping Al Qaeda's propaganda efforts?

Why are the news programs NOT ASKING THESE QUESTIONS?
