Jim Webb responds to Felix Allen.
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 04:25 PM by 11 Bravo
I was at a Democratic rally this morning in Northern Virginia, and Jim was the featured speaker. (If enough people get the opportunity to contrast his calm eloquence with Allen's stammering ignorance, this race will be THE one to watch in November.) Jim spoke of how, just prior to his "macaca" moment, Allen had mischaracterized Jim's view on the first Gulf War. Webb testified before a Congressional committee in 1990, and had warned of the chaos which would ensue following any occupation of Baghdad. (Prescient, no?) Allen lied to his audience, claiming that Jim had opposed every aspect of Gulf War I, adding that, "Even the French fought in the first Gulf War." Jim then shared with us his son Jimmy's response to Allen's bullshit. Jimmy said, "Dad, you fought in Viet Nam while George Allen didn't. Gee, Dad, even the French fought in Viet Nam." It was a great moment. (As an aside, Lance Corporal Jimmy Webb will deploy to Iraq in a week or so. Felix Allen's oldest child is headed to the safety of an exclusive college campus.)

4. Other than his stand on the Iraq War ...
Is this Webb guy any good? Given his Reagan credentials, one wonders where he stands on issues of social and economic justice. (That said, he can be pretty bad, and I'll still root for him.)

10. I've know Jim for 20 years, so I admit to a bias, but ...
he devoted a good portion of today's remarks to the planned destruction of the middle class by this administration; and the incredible gulf that used to exist between the rich and the poor that now exists between the rich and the middle class. If you get a chance to hear his message, I'm pretty sure that many of your concerns will be addressed.

12. The other guy running against Webb in the Democratic primary
Harris Miller, was a total "offshoring American jobs is good for you" neoliberal. As as matter of fact, Miller made his fortune as a lobbyist for offshoring firms.

Webb is much more of a traditional, pro-labor Democrat (thank goodness).

25. Good news!!! He's damn good!!
From web site:

Jim believes that solutions will be found using a progressive approach to policy that prioritizes fairness and justice, focused on four major themes:

* Refocusing America's foreign and defense policies in a way that truly protects our national interests and seeks harmony where they are not threatened.

* Repairing the country's basic infrastructure, which has eroded badly over the past decade, and developing more creative ways to assist disaster-stricken areas such as those in New Orleans and along the Gulf coast.

* Reinstituting notions of true fairness in American society, including issues of race, class, and economic advantage; and

* Restoring the Constitutional role of the Congress as an equal partner, reining in the unbridled power of the Presidency.

Iraq

Read Jim's August 16, 2006 speech on national security and Iraq here.

National security policy under the Bush-Cheney Administration is in total disarray. There is no end in sight to the conflict in Iraq, the Middle East is out of control, Al Qaeda is stronger today than 5 years ago, and homeland security is being neglected. These difficulties have come about, in large part, because those who are leading us lack the kind of strategic vision that has served our country so well in past eras. George Allen, by blindly following the Bush administration and neglecting his constitutional duty as a Senator, bears great amount of responsibility for the state of American foreign policy.

America has a unique place in the world. It also has unique obligations – and opposition – in the conduct of it’s foreign policy. Terrorism and Iraq were separate issues, until George Bush incorrectly and unwisely linked them; now we need to straighten out the mess in Iraq. The war in Lebanon today is a direct result of the Bush Administration’s complete failure of policy in the Middle East. Issues in the Middle East are closely connected to matters across the globe to which we need strategic solutions. For instance, China has been developing closer ties with the exact Middle Eastern countries that pose challenges to the US. This is a dangerous and neglected alliance that we need to address.

First and foremost is Iraq. Iraq is in a crisis that we must address now in order to make progress on all other security matters. The invasion of Iraq was a double strategic blunder. First, it was a diversion from, not a response to, the war against international terrorism. Second, it has tied down our military in a costly occupation, fighting an insurgency that has strengthened not only the Shia population of Iraq, but also Iran itself. America needs – and deserves – a real debate: about all these issues, and about our strategy in Iraq itself.

Being relatively computer illiterate myself, I can only try and put the ball in play, knowing full well that my brother and sister Duers will pick it up and run with it.

27. You're doing great! Well written is always welcome.
Webb is exciting. I don't think he'll roll over for anybody. I think he knows who he is and what kind of Senator he want's to be. The Senate is a mens club, without the exclusionary policies. They don't do much. Webb will shake things up real good.

(on the links, all you do is 1)put the cursor over the link you want; 2) right click and hit "Select All", and c) right click again and select copy; to to the desired location of the link, and drop it in the location you want it.

Cheers, mike

It is beyond me how it can be hard to make a choice between these two. At least for any sane person, it should be a no-brainer.

18. Aren't The French In Afghanistan Supporting US Soldiers?
It seems I saw pix of that in some French magazine (of course you'd never know it here with the wacky "the entire world is wrong and our enemy" slant on the BushCo Pravda News!)

23. Funny. What Most RW Don't Care To Realize ...
France _IS_ an outstanding ally. FRANCE have been with USA all the way in the battle in Afghanistan. Air craft from France were fighting with USA from the very beginning. (Theirs were the second nation to drop bombs after the war started.)

The line, "France fought in Viet Nam" is a great line. Look for it to be used a lot!

21. I would expect NoVA, full of educated, well informed people to be the
"power base" for Webb's candidacy, but given the guy's background, he should have strong "crossover" appeal potential throughout the state.

I hope the party puts a lot of juice into this race. I see Webb as the kind of guy who, if he can get into the Senate, has national potential if he wanted.

24. BRAVO "Bravo" !!!! Outstanding. Webb rules. K&R hard here in VA
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 07:24 PM by autorank
His first response to Felix, through his awesome and devastating press secretary, told me how smart Webb is. They go full out and just don't stop. I'm voting for him, giving him money, and I'll be doing some volunteer work. He's got a career of integrity and honor, he a thinker, and he's one of the first politicians to talk openly about race and class and how those factors get convulsed to the detriment of the people (damn "Bacon's Rebellion").

Great post!!! ;)Are you his press guy, that was pretty kick ass;)
