Poll question: Are you concerned about possible attack soon? (Serious Question.)
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 02:54 PM by Armstead
For full disclosure, let me preface this by saying that I'm probably about halfway between "tin foil" and "mainstrem conventional wisdom" regarding Amrica's security situation and the WOT. Normally, I am NOT anxious about terrorism, but I do believe it is a threat to some degree. I do think there is a danger out there from radial Muslim extremists, and I don't believe in the MIHOP theory. But I also believe the GOP and administration and the mainstrem media have cynically taken advantage of it and exagerated it to amp up the fear for nefarious purposes of their own (money and power and politics and Iraq and ratings).

Soooo, having said that, I must say that my biggest conern about the fifth anniversary of 9-11 has been dread of the hoopla and the propaganda that we will be innundated with. And wondering whether the GOP will be able to capitalize on it.

But I hafta admit that word of the latest tape from AQ with its call to convert to Islam has me more worried than usual about the real possibility of something worse happening, considering that it is coming on the verge of 9-11. I also know of the allegedly Islamic practice of calling on enemies to convert before attacking them.

Which leads to my qustion. Setting aside smartassed cynicism, are you honestly concerned that something bad might happen soon, along the lines of a new 9-11? Or is that thought just being a "nervous Nellie" for no good reason?

2. The truth of the matter is
that many, many more people die from heart disease, cancer, car crashes, etc. etc. etc. than have died from terror attacks. Maybe somebody somewhere is plotting the mother of all attacks, but I'm just not that worried about it. If it's my time to go, there's not much I can do about it.

6. When has al-Qaeda
not mentioned converting to Islam? They're religious fundamentalists, that's what they always say.

If they did have a plot lined up, it's probably the one that's just been foiled in London.

And anyway, the neocons don't need another big terror attack just yet, they're getting plenty of mileage out of nutcase Ahmedinejad.

8. Bushco may attack us again before Nov. 2
It just depends on whether or not they get enough traction from the Fascist meme they are floating right now.

Also, the flag burning, gay marriage, charter school, jebus worship shit has not been set free this year. If these issues don't make them comfortable they will keep a (impeachment/investigation proof) majority in both houses, look for another attack from Bushco and his friends/employees @ Al Qaeda.

Me, I am not worried. We here in New Orleans have already been taken out. In fact, he just visited the scene of the crime the other day.

9. They WANT you to be scared!
They meaning the govt and the "terrorists." So I am very deliberately, and honestly, NOT scared.

Because there might be an incident, and there might be a bad hurricane too. Bad things will no doubt continue to happen -- especially as long as Bush is president. But I have more pressing things to worry about -- things I can actually control!

12. No. I'm not any more afraid of a terrorist attack than I was on
9/11/01. I am convinced that that attack was allowed to happen and I am more afraid of our current government than I am of terrorists "fighting us in the streets of America".

The US launching a "pre-emptive" strike on another country (e.g. Iran) in the next 12mo, Yes. Worried about slowly loosing our civil rights? Yes.

18. I do think . . .
. . .we will see a major attack narrowly averted. Either that or a major, multi-location attack succeed in one place, almost certainly a foreign country, with many of the attacks that were destined for US soil averted by the great and noble activities of the * administration.

21. I suspect there will be more attacks - maybe worse than 9-11
The odds may be low for any one american to be killed by terrorism. However, if you end up on the wrong side of the odds like everyone who died on 9-11 the odds are small comfort.

22. What's worrying is the American (over) reaction to an attack.
I think that more attacks, on some scale, are inevitable. In fact, I'm rather surprised that they haven't occured already.

Considering what 9/11 brought about, the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the "Patriot Act", "Homeland Security", isolationist policies, the over reliance on the military "solution", and all the other irrational and incredibly inept responses that received the support of the politicians on both sides with the apporval of the American people, my worry is that this country will descend into fascism in the name of security without blinking an eye.
