6. He just agreed with a caller that it might have had something to do...
...with the response Mike got for his position on the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Apparently, Mike did not support Israel?

If there's any truth to this, I have to wonder how much of the negative response to Mike's position came from within AAR and how much came from listeners.

15. Yeah. I don't know. I'm just saying that some of Scooter's callers...

...are telling him this is what they believe. And, if there's any truth to it, I guess firing Mike and not Randi would still be possible. Maybe Randi brings in more revenue?

17. They can't get away with firing Randi...
...not at present at least, since she's really (other than Franken) their only ratings getter. But firing the overnight guy (who made THE LEAST money of all the hosts, but it was finacial reasons ? ! ) is "ok". AAR is run by people who DO NOT understand radio, and THAT will be their downfall. All of this has really started to hit the fan since they hired a "former" (yeah right) Clear Channel exec. Can you say infiltration? But mark my words, they WILL fire anyone they can get away with who isn't a DCLer. I would strongly advise Sam Seder to retool his resume...

21. But if AAR replaces their own programs with sponsored programs that they
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 02:58 PM by Garbo 2004
don't have to pay for, that does have a financial component. Not just a matter of politics, in-house or otherwise, although that may well have been a factor as well.

AAR's deal with Springer, for example. Word is that Springer paid AAR to carry the program. The notorious ABC Satellite Sisters for which they bumped Mike in NYC. And if The Nation is going to foot the bill for Laura Flanders five nights a week in Mike's slot, that would be attractive from the mere bean counter perspective. As Mike said on an interview on our local affiliate's morning show, AAR apparently didn't hesitate at the prospect of replacing him with a program that paid them to carry it. Evidently Mike didn't have enough folks in AAR management who were committed to his program, and perhaps for other than purely financial reasons. He was the red-headed stepchild. AAR still has two hours on its evening lineup to fill and apparently it will be with Eco Talk and Politically Direct? Will they be ratings getters or bring their own sponsors? "Appointment" radio that fans tune into? How many local affiliates will even carry them or keep them?

That people in charge at AAR apparently don't understand radio appears evident. Doesn't appear they got rid of Morning Sedition for even sound business reasons. They dumped Maron and look how well that turned out.

Another observation, one thing about the RW noise machine...it's not all about making money and ratings, but getting their message out. Fox News Channel from its inception was not intended to be a money maker. That wasn't its purpose. That it wound up doing so was icing on the cake for Murdoch. He practically has to give the NY Post away, but he's committed to keeping it going. When Rushbo started out in syndication, stations were paid to carry his program. The deals were made to get him and their message out and keep it there. The RW spokesmodels like Coultergeist, et. al. that are "successes" are because they are subsidized and groomed for the role from their creation...they walk into TV spots, book deals, newspaper columns, a whole network that keeps them going and promotes them, even if it means buying their books by the truckload just to get on a best sellers list and the appearance of legitimacy and mainstream appeal for their lunatic ravings and lies. They're taken care of to get the message out.

Malloy likely will be back on the air somewhere. And I imagine another 6 months or more from now there will be another shakeup of AAR's lineup. One thing AAR has to deal with is the matter of affiliates not running AAR network programming. I recall one of the reasons AAR said they dumped Sacramento's KSAC as an affiliate in favor of KCTC was that KCTC would carry more of AAR's programming. Well, KCTC's morning and afternoon drive time slots are local shows, not AAR. KSAC meanwhile has Stephanie Miller in the morning. Guess where my radio dial is set in the mornings.

7. Bottom line, he believes Mike was fired for his anti Israel position.
Scooter said there are only 3 thingsyou get fired for in this business.

Fighting with management.

Lots of complaints from advertisers.

Lots of complaints from listeners.

Scooter admited he didn't know for sure, but he's positive it WASN'T financial!

11. I wouldn't be surprised if it was about Mikes Israel position.
Just look how much fighting was done here about the subject to the point that it got shuffled off to it's own forum.

13. It may have been when he subbed for Randi
Randi's listeners aren't Mike's regular listeners, but he didn't ratchet it down for the show. He was pure Mike, and I'm betting there were a lot of unhappy listeners. I've listened to him before and even I had to turn him off.

22. Your observation occurred to me, too. I remember thinking, Holy Crap! Bet
some of Randi's regular listeners are shocked right now! I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed Mike those two days and hoped he would bring in more listeners and/or Premium subscribers to his show. But obviously I was wrong.

I don't think I ever turned Mike off. Randi, sometimes. Sam sometimes. But Mike? No!!!!

14. I think Randi distinguished between Israel the nation and

the neo-cons in power in Israel right now. It's like real Americans aren't really being represented by BushCo, but since their mark is on US actions since the Iraq invasion, many in the world condemn all of us. I don't remember Mike making that distinction, but then I wasn't able to listen to him as much as I would have liked.

My neighbor has dual citizenship in Israel and the United States and he wholly disagrees with what Israel is doing in regard to the Palestinians and now Lebanon. He doesn't like the government in power in Israel today, but he loves Israel the nation.

19. Very well put ma'am/sir!
(Sorry, I'm not gender-privy :)
I highly doubt an ultra-lefty like Mike is an anti-Semite.
It's really overdue for people to get it through their heads that being anti-Zionist (not wanting a religious government) is NOT the same as hating Jews! Hell, I'm part Jew and I damn well don't approve of ANY religious government! That doesn't mean "Blow up Israel"! However, for Israel to flatten Lebanon (with bombs they purchased from...the good ol' USA!) is entirely unacceptable. CASE CLOSED! :P

PS Anybody want to hear Mike's last 2 days on AAR? Go to the link below and enjoy not hearing commercials, traffic, weather, sports reports, local tempatures and humidity, you get the idea!

16. I love Scooter.
I've never heard Mike sounding 'anti-Semitic.' I have heard him articulate the same position that I take - intense disagreement with what the Israeli GOVERNMENT (the NeoCons in power) is doing. And that's just being patriotic, for dissent (questioning of government policy) is the highest form of patriotism.
