Thames whale dies. FReepers rejoice.
No one should be surprised. If you do not pull wings off flies, you can't be a FReeper. Let's not even talk about other animals. "Merry Christmas." If you have a strong stomach, check it out:

3. on the one hand...
they say animals "know when their time has come" and should be allowed to die in peace. but they would never extend this courtesy to a human being. of course, a sentient person would never know their "time has come", but whales do...

go figure.

"As a kid, George Bush used to blow up frogs with firecrackers just for fun. He'd stuff them with firecrackers, light the fuse and throw them up in the air and watch them blow up. At other times he'd shoot them with BB guns.

Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a violent psychopathology that does not confine itself to animals. Studies have convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention. They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes humans. Considering George Bush's preoccupation of sentencing criminals to death, creating illegal wars, and a complete silence about the thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians his war has caused (more deaths than the gassing of Kurds by Saddam Hussain), Americans might want to question the motives behind Bush's inhumane acts."

How do people get like that?

20. The whale was sick
Don't be sad. The whale did what s/he had to do. It was right for the whale. So, don't be sad.

The theories about psycho- and sociopathology are numerous. In the case of George W. Bush, the death of his younger sister, Robin, when he was seven years old, and the way his parents handled her sickness and death were probably the pivotal series of episodes that affected him thusly. He apparently was a very sweet, very normal little boy until then.

Get your hands on a copy of "Bush On The Couch," and read a very compelling and well-written discourse on that little prick's mental health. Great book.

more and more whales are falling victim as we become ever more aggressive and intrusive in their oceans. It's very sad. Poor baby. Somewhere it's family mourns. They're very intelligent and highly social. Breaks my heart.

and a marine veterinarian was interviewed by the BBC about other symptoms. It was a sick whale.

Notice how the Navy got the final report on whale beaching to delete all references to sonar? My friend at WHOI told me years ago about how much harm sonar was doing to the whales.

23. "to kill a fly"
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 04:29 PM by sweetheart
My high school biology class had a textbook titled "to kill a fly".
It taught anatomy using horseflies. You put the horsefly in the freezer,
i recall this from doing it, and then it gets sorta stunned in the cold,
so you then pin it down on a peice of disecting board and lift its head
up with 2 pins. Flies don't have skin, so the internals are exposed for
a short operation before snapping the head back in place. Using a magnifier,
shift the esophagus to the side and scratch with a pin. This breaks the
flies spinal cord. But unlike a human the fly can live with its cord
severed. But due to the organization of its brain, its stomach can't
tell its brain that it has eaten too much, and the autonomic response
of its mouth is to eat when presented with food.

So then you put the fly in to a tray of glucose water and it will expand
to the size of a grape before it explodes. A fly is not a whale, we have
a genre of animals that are "pests", ones killed with impunity, rats, mice,
mosquitos, poison spiders, scorpions and rattlesnakes. And frankly, the
methods these animals are killed are much less humane than killing a fly.

The easiest way to work the fly thing is to clip the wings with scissors
or pull them off... so your post reminds me of that. As i recall, it was
a class assigned textbook, not a freeper thing per se, but a biology thing.

36. No, i'm pointing to a false stereotype
When a california public highschool biology class textbook
uses flies as free dissection subjects, then it is not freepers
at all, but our society as a whole, that uses animals to learn
about how biosystems work. And we all benefit with much longer
lifespans for those who can afford the resulting medical discovery.

There are 2 ways to be partisan. One way is to be thuggish,
and the other is to be "justice". I think, as a party, the dems
are starting to realize the benefits of the latter approach, and
as progressives, we better hope so. But this thread seems
thuggish. Our tent can only win future elections by being a
well lit, open, welcoming tent, to the fringes of independents
and anti-bush republicans. The endless waste of energy on
mythical freepers is unbecoming and leads to focusing on their
states of mind. Then rather than focusing on our new policy
platforms, we focus on stopping the repukes... and the whole
party suffers as we have an incoherent economic alternative
to DLC vichy economics.

38. It is thuggish to de disgusted by cruel attitudes to animals?
I suppose I should congratulate you on managing to combine callousness and sneering self-rigteousness so seemlessly. But a couple of hints. The "mythical freepers" you mentioned are not "mythical", you only have to click on the link in the OP to see that they are very real. And no amount of pseudo-zen 8th grade poetics can disguise the vile glee you clearly took in relating your nasty little fly story.

Any tent so big that it includes those who revel in animal suffering is not worth having.

40. Your post is ludicrous
The little story is illustrated in a step by step diagram
in a textbook from a public school. A fly is not an animal,
not a cat, not a dog. Most food establishments have fly killing lights,
every single hardware shop in ameirca carries fly killing paper where
they stick and die.... and you've think you've got a moral corner
on me because i related a 28 year old anecdote from high school
life sciences.

The freepers are irrelevant if you ignore them. I've had not a single
problem with freepers since coming on 10,000 posts over several years
now.... they are only flies in your fly paper if you hang the stuff.
My solution to mice in the kitchen these days, rather than setting
traps, is to secure all food in mouse-proof bins. But i do have a
mosquito light, and i DO take a satisfaction every time i see a mosquito
die on that light. Though some buddhists do it in the himalayas, i
don't go out and save earthworms out of rain puddles either.

When you form your silly political party of all the people who don't
kill flies, then let us know if you need a 2 or a 3 person tent. But
spare me the mirage that you're anywhere close to democratic party
mainstream.
