The Lost Executioner: A Journey to the Heart of the Killing Fields
Nic Dunlop

Journalist and author Nic Dunlop speaks at the Asia Society in San Francisco about his book "The Lost Executioner: A Story of the Khmer Rouge." A native of Ireland and a photographer by training, the author gives a detailed look at the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian Communist regime responsible for more than two million deaths between 1975 and 1979. In his book, Mr. Dunlop hones in on Comrade Duch, head of the Khmer Rouge secret police and Pol Pot's chief executioner, who had been missing until 1999. Mr. Dunlop attempts to discover how a well-educated schoolteacher became commandant of a torture center and a participant in the deaths of an estimated 20,000 political prisoners. The presentation involves an open discussion preceded by a slide show chronicling Mr. Dunlop’s series of visits to Cambodia.

Nic Dunlop was born in Ireland and has contributed to numerous newspapers, periodicals, and magazines around the globe. He was the recipient of the 1999 Excellence in Journalism award from Johns Hopkins University.

Public Schools, Public Menace: How Public Schools Lie To Parents and Betray Our Children
Joel Turtel

In "Public Schools, Public Menace" author Joel Turtel urges parents to permanently take their children out of public schools. He suggests parents use accredited Internet schools and computer learning software to home-school their children. This event was hosted by Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Washington, DC.

Joel Turtel owned a consulting company for fifteen years and is the author of "The Welfare State: No Mercy For the Middle Class."

63. This is a Republican hit piece against our school system.
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 11:01 AM by sfexpat2000
This guy was so disgusting. He tried to scare his audience by saying children are not taught to read and they are given calculators instead of math skills. Worst of all, our school system is a GOVERNMENT MONOPOLY!

Then, he tries to sell homeschooling and INTERNET SOFTWARE. (Neal, was that you?)

He claims to have volunteered in public schools while he was researching his books. He said nothing of substance, had no theoretical underpinning for his claims. He was a salesman and the audience just sank to his level.

Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush
Eric Boehlert

Eric Boehlert discusses his latest book, "Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush." He argues that the press is apprehensive about being critical of the Bush administration because they do not want to be accused of demonstrating a liberal bias. He argues that conservatives have gained greatly from the media's weak coverage of the Republican administration. Mr. Boehlert looks at the way the media covered the investigation into Karl Rove's role in the Valerie Plame outing, Whitewater, the Terry Schiavo right to die case, and Al Gore's 2000 presidential bid. He also examines the Bush and Clinton administrations' manipulation of the press and suggests that liberals need to learn how to better articulate their message to the press. Strand Bookstore in New York City hosted this event.

Eric Boehlert is a journalist and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone. He writes extensively on media, politics, and pop culture. His writings appear in the Hufffington Post website and Salon.com.

Secdef: The Nearly Impossible Job of Secretary of Defense
Charles Stevenson

During a discussion at Politics and Prose, Charles Stevenson examines what he considers to be the most difficult job in Washington, DC, the Secretary of Defense. As national security adviser to four U.S. senators, Mr. Stevenson has had the opportunity to observe those who have held Defense Secretary position. During the talk, Mr. Stevenson categorizes individuals who have held this post as revolutionaries, firefighters, or team players. Mr. Stevenson analyzes each type, defines characteristics, and explains how particular Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld, Robert McNamara, and James Forrestal have done their jobs.

Charles Stevenson has observed the office of Secretary of Defense since 1960, as a defense and foreign policy adviser to four U.S. Senators. He is a professor at the National War College in Washington, DC. He also teaches at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. 64. This propagandist is a real piece of work. She claims to be
progressive and femnist, She claims fascism always comes from the left. She claims "there is nothing more dangerous than people who do the opposite of what they say."

And she said "I voted for Reagan. I didn't always agree with him JUST AS PEOPLE MAY NOT AGREE WITH PRESIDENT * ON IMMIGRATION, but it was about loving this country and voting for someone who loved America. :wow:

She's good at what she does even if she sounds psychotic to me.

policy! Condi! Because she was the architect of the war! I feel so much better now!

And here's your proof that we were going into Iraq no matter what. They hired someone their 30persenters could hate very easily when they scapegoat her for their destructiveness.

This is quite an education. I may have to read this POS.

69. It's like watching a horror movie. I finally turned it off, too but
I'm glad I watched because she made their rhetorical strategy a little clearer to me.

Co-opt all our descriptors

Paint liberals as fascists with all the moving parts -- controlling, malevolent, etc

Fascilitate a Republican vote --"I didn't agree with him but he loves America"

Fuel fear and hated: liberals glamorize abortion, encourage gays to give each other HIV, and on and on and on.

Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq
Stephen Kinzer

Stephen Kinzer discusses the U.S.'s long history of regime change, the subject of his new book, "Overthrow." Mr. Kinzer argues that the U.S. invasion of Iraq has historical roots going back to the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and says that while the policy of direct military involvement to achieve regime change was put on hold during the Cold War, it has been reestablished since the fall of the Soviet Union. Mr. Kinzer talks about several of the fourteen episodes of regime change he discusses in his book, including America's involvement in Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Iran. He answers questions form the audience following his remarks.

Stephen Kinzer, a longtime foreign correspondent for the New York Times, has been the Times bureau chief in Turkey, Germany, and Nicaragua. He is the author of several books, including "All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror" and "Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala" (co-authored with Stephen Schlesinger).
