Helen Thomas: Where Is The Opposition In The Opposition Party?
Published on Friday, September 1, 2006 by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Give Voters a Choice About War
by Helen Thomas

WASHINGTON -- The war and the U.S. occupation of Iraq certainly are going to be the crowning issues in the Nov. 7 mid-term elections.

That's why it's time for the Democratic candidates to call for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

We don't need more phony timetables to prolong the agony. We need a quick exit from a bad show.

It's distressing that The Washington Post has found that most Democrats in competitive congressional races are resisting pressure to call for a speedy pullout. Those spineless Democrats are apparently frightened by the prospect that the Bush administration would use the "cut-and-run" fear card against them.

Where is the opposition in the opposition party?

2. They couldn't get the funding from the defense contractors to run
so the local and state parties picked people based on "name recognition" and those "who would go along to get along"...but had some democratic characteristics...

3. Helen has said it all - no opposition heard from
Well, there are a FEW and we all know them very well. Those few Democratic politicians that are speaking clearly and honestly are a sure win for the party. So, why don't the others sniveling in the corners not taking notice?

And she is counting it correctly.

This morning at breakfast, my husband said that this election and what the Dems say or do around it is the last chance he is giving the party. I don't know if he has given thought to what his options are--he'll never vote R. I can't see him voting Green since they don't mind being the spoiler party funded by the Rs. My guess is he will simply not vote, and that is even worse. He is not happy with what the Democratic party is and is not saying and doing now.

7. Where? They're all being "pragmatic," Helen.
After all, even as we're constantly reminded on DU, it's wrong to take a stand on principle if it means jeopardizing one's job. Necessity is the mother (f*cker) of conventions, I guess. The convention of the day is supporting the lesser of two weevils. We've become part of the axis of weevils.
