Jonah Goldberg Gives Bush A "Pity Party"
Give Bush a break
By Jonah Goldberg
Friday, September 1, 2006

...........................

Besides, the Bush-bashers have lost credibility. The most delicious example came this week when it was finally revealed that Colin Powell's oak-necked majordomo Richard Armitage - and not some star-chamber neocon - "outed" Valerie Plame, the spousal prop of Washington's biggest ham, Joe Wilson. Now it turns out that instead of "Bush blows CIA agent's cover to silence a brave dissenter" - as Wilson practices saying into the mirror every morning - the story is, "One Bush enemy inadvertently taken out by another's friendly fire."

And then there's Hurricane Katrina. Yes, the federal government could have responded better. And of course there were real tragedies involved in that disaster. But you know what? Bad stuff happens during disasters, which is why we don't call them tickle-parties.

.....................

Then, of course, there's the war on terror. Democrats love to note that Bush hasn't caught Osama bin Laden yet, as if this is the most vital metric for success. Yes, it'd be nice to catch bin Laden - no doubt Ramsey Clark, the top legal gun for both LBJ and Saddam Hussein, will be looking for a new client soon. But even nicer than catching bin Laden is not having thousands of dead Americans in New York, Washington and L.A. Contrary to all expert predictions, there hasn't been a successful attack on the homeland since 9/11. Indeed, the current issue of the Atlantic Monthly contains a long, exhaustively reported cover story by James Fallows about how the U.S. is, in fact, winning the war on terror, thanks largely to Bush's policies (though Fallows works hard not to credit Bush).

..............................

Look, things could obviously be a lot better. But they could be a lot worse too. John Kerry could be president.

2. Why isn't this asshole serving in Iraq?
I think this everytime I see his fat face in the local paper. He's young, he's Repug, seems healthy. What's he doing on this side of the Atlantic?

6. Because that's for the little people, silly
People like Jonah goldberg aren't supposed to serve in the military. They might get all dirty and stuff. That's the sort of thing that the little people like Democrats, poor people, and blacks are supposed to do, while the important people like Goldberg watch over their portfolios, buy yachts, and TiVo American Idol.

3. I've stopped reading Goldberg. There's just no point.
He joins Thomas Sowell, Linda Chavez, Kathleen Parker, and Charles Krauthammer on my "Why Bother?" list. They are predictably partisan, and Parker adds the twist of being predictably dumb as well.

Strangely, Cal Thomas used to be on the list but became readable when he dropped the religious overlay a few years ago. I'm on the fence about George Will.

8. Maybe only by comparison with the way he was.
Have you seen Thomas on "Fox News Watch" (Saturday, 6:30 ET)? Talk about WTF, that's my favorite show on TV! (KO is a very close second, but the celebrity crap drags it down. FNW is smart from beginning to end.)

11. I say that because I've seen some of his articles lately
in which he rants about how the media won't rport all the 'good things' going on in Iraq because they are so liberal and are trying to destroy the President. I havn't seen him on a show, but the articles I've seen are pathetic.

Also, I refuse to watch Fox Bullshit.

12. He wouldn't get away with that on FNW.
Neal Gabler would shoot him down before you could say "Deadeye Dick". That's what makes the show great. It is the "rose among thorns" at Fox.

Maybe I'm wrong about the readability, though. Cal isn't in our paper very often.

9. Will's writing is ponderous, dry and humorless.
With a few exceptions, he predictably bashes liberals, although in such an erudite way that it's hard to tell (or care about) what he's saying.

14. "Bad stuff happens during disasters"? "Tickle-parties"?
Guess we should pay no attention to the human incompetance that compounds said disasters then, huh.

What an asshat....

15. This sort of thing is what most of my conversations with Rs turn into
They acknowledge (albeit with full sugarcoating) all sorts of negatives about Bush, and admit all the mistakes, stupidities, corrupt decisions, etc., but then they fall back on their imaginary boogiemen of how a D administration would be worse. Worse how? They have no idea - just "worse." You can tell that they feel the walls crumbling, but they're just completely unable to admit it...
