Analysis: Argentina to dramatically expand its nuclear program

MIAMI, United States (UPI) -- Argentina intends to dramatically expand its existing nuclear program to meet the country`s growing energy needs, a decision that has drawn the condemnation of environmentalists. snip

The project would also reportedly seek to resume Argentina`s long-dormant uranium mining industry. snip

They also didn`t comment on reports in Clarin newspaper that the country was considering the resumption of its uranium enrichment program, which was shut down in 1983 due to budget restrictions.

Enriched uranium is the fuel for operating nuclear power plants, though it can also be used in a nuclear weapon.

The notion of a uranium-enriching program could raise eyebrows in Washington and elsewhere considering the implications it carries for having the potential to create weapons of mass destruction.
