Bush spin on Iraq war won't hurt Democrats: experts
Bush spin on Iraq war won't hurt Democrats: experts

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Attempts by the administration of US President George W. Bush to justify the continuing war in Iraq by comparing it to the 20th century war against Nazism as November elections draw near could actually benefit divided Democrats, experts said.

"The battle for Iraq is now central to the ideological struggle of the 21st century. We will not allow the terrorists to dictate the future of this century, so we will defeat them in Iraq," Bush told the American Legion veterans group Wednesday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

On Tuesday, before the same audience, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld likened opponents to the Iraq war to those who stood by as the Nazi threat turned into World War Two.

That charge prompted bitter responses from the opposition Democrats, many of whom have been calling for the government to pull US troops out of Iraq.

"Rumsfeld is the last person who should preach the lessons of history after ignoring them for the last six years," said Senator Edward Kennedy.

1. I think Kennedy is wrong. Here's why.
Everytime the administration flacks open their mouths, they remind the American people of why we are in Iraq, and how we got there. This gives the loyal opposition a chance to open debate on this subject, a debate which cannot be lost.

We have the facts and logic on our side. We should not fear the rabble-rousing of the base, but keep repeating our position, our supporting evidence, and our plan for the future.

Only the Democrats can prevent a Democratic sweep this November. Of course, they are very good at that, but with a little courage of convictions a lot can be done.
