A Salt Lake man is in jail after being accused of starving a five-year-old disabled child left in his care by a soldier who was deployed to Iraq.

Little Jade (last name withheld), who has cerebral palsy, weighed only 13 pounds when authorities finally caught up with Michael John Bowden, who was her legal guardian. Jade's mother is a U.S. soldier who was deployed to Iraq earlier this year.

She left Jade with Bowden, giving him legal custody and the power of attorney for her little girl. Jade's grandfather told Bowden that he would be glad to take care of Jade if necessary, but Bowden moved and disappeared.

The grandfather was worried about Jade, and did everything he could to find her. He worked for months to track the pair down, but claims Bowden did everything possible to avoid the man.

<snip>

The emaciated child was close to death when she was brought in, weighing only 13 pounds, just days before her sixth birthday. Normal weight for a child Jade's age is closer to 40 pounds. One officer said that a doctor at the hospital told him Jade would not have survived much longer.

1. Lock this guy up and throw away the key.

edit: And the bitch he lives with. "She eats more than I do sometimes" my ass.

There was money involved. And the fact that it took the grandfather four days to get a court to allow him to get that child medical care is another crime.

5. Will the mother get leave to come and take care of her child?
I can't even imagine how anyone could do that to a kid.

I hope there is a way to charge the women involved, but as all democrats know from watching the country being driven into the ground by the republicans - just because something is immoral or unethical doesn't make it illegal.

8. she is home thank God!

Jade's mother is now back in Utah on emergency family medical leave from the military.

....personally I would like to see her re-assigned permanently back in the states to take care of her baby.

6. What a bad story. I usually do not feed them
I know of a child who is doing very well now who's real mother did this to her. Thank God the state found these kids and took them away from her. She did feed the boy. Both are in homes with new names and new parents.

7. So sad to read that
I just read it out loud to my daughter who reminded me she was 10lb and 24" long when she was born and I know she weighed 13lbs in next to no time.

I hope the poor little mite recovers soon now she's in better hands. I'm guessing Jade will go to her grandfather when she's well enough to do so.
