2. You can put it next to your Rove subpoena, you know--truthout's scoop.
There's been absolutely NO news since Tuesday. Even though an announcement was supposed to take place outside Verizon's NY headquarters.

Maybe no one showed up, including rawstory.

3. US Newswire Press Release
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 10:56 PM by chill_wind
Lawyers Will Subpeona Bush White House in Phone Company Spying Case

8/29/2006 9:29:00 AM

To: Assignment Desk, Daybook Editor

Contact: Bruce Afran, 609-924-2075 or 609-933-7695 (cell), or Carl Mayer, 609-921-0253 or 609-462-7979 (cell)

News Advisory:

WHAT: Press Conference Releasing White House Subpoena

WHERE: Verizon Headquarters, 140 West St., New York (at Vesey Street, across from the World Trade Center site)

WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 4:30 p.m.

WHO: Bruce Afran and Carl Mayer, attorneys for hundreds of plaintiffs in litigation against the Bush Administration and the phone companies

DETAILS: Two lawyers who brought the first lawsuit against the Bush Administration, Verizon and ATT for illegally examining the phone records of virtually every American citizen will announce today that they are serving subpoenas on the Bush White House and on Verizon.

"We are subpoenaing the White House because we have developed evidence that the Bush Administration began unlawful efforts to obtain Americans' private phone records prior to 9/11/01 and the White House must disclose documents relevant to that claim," said Afran. "We believe that Verizon had extensive involvement in illegally disclosing the records of millions of Americans."

"We are going to determine with these subpoenas whether the Bush administration has unlawfully targeted journalists, peace activists, libertarians, members of congress or generated an 'enemies list' by creating the most massive domestic spying operation in America's history," said Mayer.

The subpoenas come on the heels of two federal court decisions that were major blows to the Bush Administration warrantless spying program.

Earlier this month, federal judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled the entire program unconstitutional and illegal; another federal judge in San Francisco rejected the Bush Administration's attempt to dismiss these lawsuits by claiming they breach national security.

Are you suggesting the text or fact of the subpoena itself was fabricated?
Or that it was not actually served... or what?

Here it reportedly is: (pdf document)

I agree with you, it seems very peculiar that there has been no seeming further follow up. Something is very weird.

5. Not suggesting the subpoena's fabricated at all.

But (correct me if I'm wrong) if it hasn't been delivered to the White House, it has as much clout as the (apparently) nonexistent one that truthout was shouting about.

I'm just so sick and tired of jumping on the BIG NEWS!!! bandwagon only to be disappointed yet again, that's all.

And the fact that very few on DU seem interested in trying to find out just what the hell is going on is frankly a bit depressing, especially considering that it was all we were talking about on Tuesday.

Ah, well. This Canadian has plenty of suspicious crap going on in his own backyard that needs attention, too.

(And thanks for being interested, chill_wind!)

I just posted a link to your thread. I'd KR this again, but I already did :-)

I too am surprised at the lack of curiosity.

I also did a litte googling and looked around a few blogs that trumpeted the story, like rawstory and talkleft on Tuesday and see no updates...

Maybe someone else has some thoughts.

4. US Newswire press release mispells subpoena "Subpeona"
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 11:17 PM by chill_wind
in its release headline. Now, as it happens, my own spelling and mistyping really sucks now and then (often, actually) and I'm a lazy proofreader, but then again I don't work for a law firm that spits and spells out this word on a regular basis and I have to ask- would a law firm's secretary, clerk, paralegal or other appointed press release publicist really do that on something of headlines of this much magnitude? Mispell headlines like that and not proofread?

Seems curious.
