Does it strike anyone else funny that one of the best mayors in the
country is from one of the most conservative states?

"A patriot does not tell people who are intensely concerned about their country to just sit down and be quiet; to refrain from speaking out in the name of politeness or for the sake of being a good host; to show slavish, blind obedience and deference to a dishonest, war-mongering, human-rights-violating president," Mayor Anderson told the crowd, estimated by organizers to number between 4,000 and 5,000

1. Not 'specially.
Big cities tend to be liberal. OK, maybe a little surprising considering that Utah is our own self contained theocracy.

3. Gak! I was living in New York when he was elected.
It's a little strange there. There is a very strong moderate Republican tradition in New York. LaGuardia, Lindsay, Koch, etc. won as Republicans. Banks, Wall Street, Corporations are strong Republican. Part of it is the strength of the Liberal Party which splits the left vote. Sometimes the Liberal Party makes a deal with the Repubs, as in Lindsay. Giuliani was strong on his rep as a federal prosecutor. Law and order was a good issue for him at a bad time for New York, and there was a backlash against Dinkins. Giuliani could not be elected there if he was perceived as a real conservative.

In any case, many cities could go either way depending local politics, personalities, timing.
