Gun-totin', SUV drivin', shorthaired thugs attack National Guardsman
The Drudge Report links to the following story about a group of five men who jumped and beat down a uniformed National Guardsman in Parkland, Washington. The five thugs reportedly called the soldier a "baby killer" while assaulting him.

The implication is that the thugs were motivated by opposition to Bush's wars; the investigating detective is quoted as saying, "This is something new for us, we have not had military people assaulted because they were in the military or somebody's opposition to a war or whatever."

Here's the link

When's the last time you heard of five liberal/progressive anti-war activists driving around in a black SUV with a gun looking for a soldier to attack?

Could it be that five reactionary thugs thought they could discredit the anti-war movement? After all, "baby killer" sounds suspiciously like a contrived phrase inserted into the mouth of a stereotype of a sixties hippie.

Anything is possible, but this smells VERY fishy to me.

3. Another train of thought
One of the first things that came to my mind was perhaps this Guardsman got his ass kicked and was too embarrassed to admit that he mouthed off to a little guy and paid dearly for it.

When I returned from service in the Navy in 1975, I flew in to San Francisco in my whites and never once did anyone ever make a baby killer comment or spit on me.

7. When I (we) returned from Saudi in 96
we were in Desert Khamis and got cheered when we got on the plane back to the states and we were cheered as we walked through the airport in Phillie. It was appreciated but I couldn't wait to get out of the uniform and into civvies. I was changing in the men's room waiting for my flight home and a guy offered to buy me a beer. I told him thanks but I was in a hurry.

13. Yeah, I think the Vietnam stuff was just an urban legend. I always
laugh at the version that has a tearful Marine who has been spat upon by a group of flower-children. Yeah. Sure. Your generic Marine who bursts into tears when confronted. Not much like the Marines I've known!

16. I managed to escape the draft in the sixties . .
. . by having a high number and reaching 26 before it was called.

However, I had many friends who were not so lucky . . as almost anyone else in my age group who did not get drafted for whatever reasons did. Our friends who went in did their duty even though most of them hated the war they were in. Some came back pretty messed up by the experience of having people who they had no argument with trying to kill them - and vice versa - and watching their friends die for some political agenda.

Everyone who I knew felt nothing but compassion for those who were in the military - and who had no choice but to deal with it. The last thing we would have done is attacked a military person or said ugly things to them in uniform.

I personally sat up for many nights with a friend who returned from the siege of Khe San an emotional mess.

20. I have often speculated that
if any Viet Nam vet was actually spat upon that it was probably because said Vet was acting like a jerk, rather than any actual political statement on the part of the spitter.

11. Maybe the flannel-clad rednecks of the Pacific NW dropped out of *'s base.
They like to beat down people... They probably got the term from a relative's anti-abortion rallies. Maybe their dad got fired from a lumberyard. Just being honest here....

If so, bush is in trouble. When rednecks (or the Pac NW equivalent) start going on about "f*ck the system and f*ck if I'm sending my kid into this man's army, let thse people from (the other side of the tracks) go" and beating people up without first determining them to be Democrats, well, that's when you start tearing society apart like in the 1970's.

of the skinhead agent provocateur variety.

'Scuse my suspicious left wing mind, but I'd dearly love to know the race of the soldier who was attacked.

15. Yeah, I could definitely see this.
In between denunciations of the "Zionist Occupied Government" these skinheads decided to pretend to be anti-war protesters in order to goose people's sense of moral indignation. They probably care more about making pacifists and leftists look bad than whether or not we stay in Iraq.

14. Another thread, same subject, here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2486202

I speculated that they were working on their LIBERAL AGENDA badges...start with babykilling and anti war, and later, they'll be able to get to treehugging and environmental issues, at which point they'll be permitted to dump the SUV~~!

It's a load of shit, stinks to high heaven!!!!

Either that, or maybe the guy guarded abortion clinics on his weekends off...that would shine a little light on the "babykiller" comment. The guys in the SUV are pals of that Olympic bomber....

17. Let's see, no witnesses, no license plate, no name for the guy that
was allegedly attacked, no hospital named that he would have been taken to, no pictures of blood at the crime scene.....

This story doesn't even rise to the level of a Parlock unless the suspects look like the guy on the left here:

27. that's because he was unhurt
The original story tells us that this guy was knocked to the ground by FIVE men, kicked, punched etc. yet he had only minor injuries and didn't require hospitalization.

When was the last time you heard of a five-on-one fight that involved throwing, kicking, and punching where the person was essentially unhurt? Yet the rest of the story made this appear to be a savage beating.

I smell a large rat in this thing.

22. This story Reeks
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 04:30 PM by mcscajun
It's either agents provocateurs, or a guy who couldn't say who really kicked the shit out of him and made up the whole damned thing. I'm reminded of a quick scene in "Goodfellas" -- the white mafia types hijack his truck in a prearranged set-up, then he yells: "Hey, you got a phone? Two n****rs just stole my truck. You believe that shit, huh? You fuckin' believe that?"

Either way, until more details surface to clarify the story, we can expect Rush, Hannity, Beck and all the other ReichWingnuts to beat the drums on this one -- loud and long -- to hang all antiwar activists with the "crime", and challenge our leaders to denounce the "crime". They'll smirk while they say "alleged", IF they bother to use the word at all. They love the Blame Game, they really do.

IS there a Stinky Story Smiley somewhere? Dead Fish or something?

24. There was a similar incident in the Pacific Northwest
where two soldiers were confronted and assaulted outside a nightclub.

Limbaugh ended his program the next day saying (in so many words,) "this proves that the anti-war types aren't the pacifists they say they are."

Of course, no mention had been made by anyone that the assaulters had any political motive whatsoever.

28. Well of course not, "everyone knows" that the Pacific Northwest
is a hotbed of pacifist activism. :sarcasm: The one friend I had who lived in Washington State (we're out of touch now) was a Jane Fonda-loathing veteran, too young to have ever served in 'Nam, BTW. Definitely NOT a pacifist.

Anyway, why let truth interfere with a good rant? So, Limbaugh could just sneer at those "West Coast liberal pacifist thugs" without a thought. Which is, of course, how he operates most days...without thought.

23. Same street punks who did the spitting in the 60s
I saw a kid, his last night before leaving for Nam, beaten to a pulp by a bunch of greasers in Maine in 1967. They set him up by having one of their girlfriends ask him to dance, then moved in and beat him up for hitting on her.

These were the very opposite of liberals and hippies. They were redneck assholes.

25. yes, this stinks worse than...
...than a dead skunk in the middle of the road in high summer. First, the stories of Viet vets being abused by peaceniks have been effectively disproved and debunked by reputable scholarship

Second, the description of the alleged perps (five, 20-25 yr. old white males; black SUV w/heavily-tinted windows and no bumperstickers; armed; dressed alike--and in RED?!?, not even blue?) more closely resemble the characatistics of pro-war types who give the finger to or shout obscenties at peace vigilers (and i speak from years of experience and observation). That there are no witnesses (to date) suggests something along the lines of a shady business transaction gone bad; a provoked (by one party or the other) confrontation; or the act of provocateurs (wouldn't surprise me in the least if the FBI was behind it).

29. Funny story from Gulf War I
I was part of a peace protest on the University of Georgia campus. We set up a camp right on the front yard in downtown Athens.

One day a schoolbus passed by with a dozen or so kids waving at us out the windows.

The moment we waved back, every one of the little brats flipped us off.

26. Ku Klux Klan wins approval to protest Iraq war
The National Park Service granted a request by the Ku Klux Klan to rally and protest near the spot where a failed offensive by the Confederacy turned the tide of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Gordon Young of the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan obtained the permit Wednesday for about 100 people to participate in a Sept. 2 event on the lawn of the Cyclorama Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, near the site of Pickett’s Charge. The purpose, according to the permit, will be to oppose the Iraq war and speak on "white unity between the North and South."

The permit was granted in light of the constitutional rights of free speech and peaceable assembly, Gettysburg park superintendent John A. Latschar said in a statement yesterday. About 30 members of Young’s group and other white-supremacist organizations gathered June 10 at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Md. About 30 counterdemonstrators and about 200 law enforcement officers were there, too.
