Mr. Olbermann,
You say you think it presumptuous to compare yourself to Edward R. Murrow. I think I'll take this opportunity to (respectfully) disagree. Mr. Murrow was a great man, and a great journalist - this no student of history or journalism would doubt. But he was not unique. He was but an inheritor of an honored tradition which stretches back over our history, not just American history, but history wherever people gathered to celebrate freedom and fight tyranny. And I believe Mr. Murrow understood, as evidently you do, that the greatest tyranny is that of the small mind, that which brooks no dissent, not because dissent gives comfort to our enemies, as is often claimed, nor because it gives pause to our friends, but because it robs the small minded of the moral certitude they need to commit unspeakable acts and still claim to be moral men.

My letter:

Keith Olbermann is selling himself short when he compares himself so unfavorably with the late Edward R. Murrow. He may not be of be of Murrow's stature yet, but his writing is among the best on television news today. And KO stands head and shoulders above all the other alleged "journalists" of our time who wait to be spoonfed every story and have neither the bravery nor the desire to stand up to power when we the people so urgently need the Fourth Estate to fulfill its role. "The job of the newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." More people in the media need to remember this axiom. Mr. Olbermann speaks for so many of us who are without a voice, who have not been represented as the media in this country allowed its role to go from watchdog to lapdog, who desperately share his desire for America to be respected again.

Mr. Olbermann is the reason I watch MSNBC. He speaks truth to power and doesn't flinch. In his book "They Thought They Were Free," Milton Mayer points out that one reason Fascism was able to spread in Germany is that people who disagreed felt alone, like they were the one out of step, because they never heard a voice of dissent; they never heard anyone question the authority that Hitler and his henchmen had claimed. Mr. Olbermann is one of the few voices in the darkness that remind us that we are not alone, we are not out of step and that this is still - sometimes only barely - a democracy.

I commend and thank Mr. Olbermann for his words last night, and every night. We need more people like him on the airwaves.

Please don't be disturbed if you receive many negative letters regarding Keith Olbermann's brave denunciation of Donald Rumsfeld last night. It seems to be the nature of the right wing to be as loud and strident as possible in its criticism of dissenters, as if it could make up for its failing numbers by sheer volume.

But as you must know from your own polls, we who agree with Mr. Olbermann are THE MAJORITY in America today, and we have been virtually unrepresented in the media for way too long. Keith Olbermann's show is the best program on MSNBC, and his powerful statement last night on behalf of America is the best thing he's ever done. Thank you for allowing the show to go on the air, and please don't even think about firing him or reprimanding him. America needs more journalists with his kind of courage in this age of near-dictatorship. As Mr. Olbermann pointed out, democracy is still alive in America, but just barely. Sir -
I am sure that you are getting many many articulate complaints from
those who occupy the far Right. Whenever anyone speaks out against the
Administration, those who have close ties to the Administration
immediately begin a campaign of scurrilous accusations as to the untruth, the
discourteousness, and the non-patriotic flavor of the Speaker.

At times such activity reminds me of the Nixon Administration when that
Administration answered a Washington Post poll by having the White
House workers assemble in the WH basement and write multitudes of letters
(per person) to the Post. The results of that poll put the
Administration's response in Vietnam into the Winning Column by over a
1,000 votes - just about the same number as the number of facetious
notes written to the pollsters.

Please understand that Olbermann stands with the vast majority of the
American people. And the vast majority of American people stand with
Olbermann. Very few of us match his eloquence, but his eloquence allows
all of us who stand with him to hope that better times may be possible
for the Nation, despite the current fall under the spell of corruption,
deceit and malfeasance.

Under Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney, our country has lost us so much in
terms of lives overseas (Iraq and Afghanistan), lives at home (Katrina),
and of course the massive decrease in the Nation's bank account
(a decrease that will plague our youngsters with deficits for years to
come.)

Dear Mr. Abrams,

It's difficult to measure the amount of support out there for Keith Olbermann's breathtaking response to the Secretary of Defense. That's because the vast majority of people on our side, on Keith's side, aren't rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth, neurotic losers who spend a great deal of time on the phone, e-mailing, and sending angry seething letters to the media about any and all things we dislike. That is a tactic that has been used and abused by the loyal but grossly ignorant "dittoheads" so to speak of the right-wing punditry (the listeners of Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.).

Should you receive hateful responses from such people, I hope you take the time to really read what they're saying. Chances are it won't take long for you to realize the people you're dealing with are often missing a few screws. To put it another way, they're flipping out of their minds.

The normal Americans, the people who don't make it their call in life to declare war on liberals and on anyone who dares to exercise the first amendment by questioning the administration, are THANKFUL that Keith Olbermann is standing with us. It seems like the rest of the media have chosen to step on the side of the executive branch, facts-be-damned, and play a major role via their utter complicity in advancing the agenda of this President and his good-ol-boy network of partners.

Think about posterity. How embarrassing for the media to know that people will look back on the media and scratch their heads at how easily the 4th estate forgot their most important function towards the democratic process and simply jumped into the pocket of the administration. Keith Olbermann, on the other hand, will be able to hold his head high.

And anyone with half a brain and who cares about this country and cares about their children's future ought to shake Olbermann's hand for not forgetting what America means and what America stands for, and for remembering the role the media is SUPPOSED to play in preserving our freedom.

I'm just downright disgusted with the media. I don't trust it anymore. Olbermann's the one exception. He's gained my trust and my respect. And back to my original point, I have personally watched the video from 8-30-06 with friends and family members, all of whom deeply appreciated the commentary. But I happen to know that none of them will send you a letter or an e-mail of support. Most average, normal people won't, even though they agree with Keith. Please keep that in mind as you read the vicious and organized attacks from the right wing superfreaks that are surely headed your way.

Conservatives scream that you have to hate Hollywood and the ACLU and the UN to their poor constituents, and then turn around and get money from their rich donors by promising to protect them from Mexicans, Niggers and Faggots.

Any time I read something by an angry guy named 'riverdog', it's really not that hard to extrapolate who you are:

You're the middle-class to poor blue-collar guy on the GOP side of the aisle who's been told that he has to hate Hollywood, and Fags, and Limousine Liberals (though most of us are now in low-emmission vehicles, because we give a shit about our country and it's future, beyond next week).

And the actuality is that you're probably a reasonably good guy that has a lot of friends and enjoys a beer and a foot ballgame and a barbeque. Or a few beers and a few football games and a lot of barbeque.

Just like the guys on our side.

Yet, you've bought in to it.

And because you subscribe to hate, well, that makes you kind of a sucker. Notice; I'm not calling you a racist or a homophobe; I'm calling you a sucker.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and big cheers to you for your commentary regarding Mr. Rumsfeld.

I am not a big fan of MSNBC or CNN and I steer clear of FOX News, however I do make it a point to watch your show at every opportunity.

Since September 11, 2001 - we've been called traitors, accused of being unpatriotic. Various "hosts" of other shows and newspaper columns have called for us to be arrested and/or shot for having an opposing opinion. Mr. Rumsfeld has ramped this up to a new level by insinuating we are appeasers and fascists.

The "buzzwords" are out there and from now until at least the November elections we will be hearing every neo-con throwing them at anyone who dares to disagree with them.

You may want to track these particular buzzwords and give a weekly update on how many times members and toadys of the Bush administration use them.

Thank you so much for standing up to the Bush administration and saying what few in the national media have the guts to say. Your editorial against Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, was spot on. I am so tired of Bush and his people lying, misleading, and twisting the English language to suite their purposes.

And yes, by strict definition the Bush administration is a lot more fascist than anyone in the Middle East.

The other night Kieth Olbermann somewhat renewed my optimism regarding the eventual triumph of truth over the big lie.

Until then, I thought real journalism was dead. I though it died with Edward R. Murrow and Cronkite's retirement.

I felt the same feelings hearing Kieth's commentary as I did when watching Cronkite tell the truth about the endless, "un-winnable war" in Vietnam, as when I watched Nixon's resignation and as the people must have felt when Murrow broke the long night of Joe McCarthy's witch hunt (I saw that broadcast but was too young to really appreciate it other than the relief I felt from my parents).

You should consider Mr. Olbermann for NBC Network News anchor. Your ratings would go through the roof and you would finally begin fulfilling your Constitutional purpose.
