I like David Gergen
He was a Republican in Clinton's cabinet also in Reagan's. He is a self proclaimed "moderate" but still calls himself a Republican. He is in fact the only Republican I find credible. He writes articles for several outlets and is a true voice of reason. While I do not agree with him on several issues he is always willing to discuss his views and never ever resorts to name-calling or belittlement in any way. He is an honorable man and I am grateful for his lone voice of sanity from the dark side...He is an example of how it should be in America and certainly not how it is..

1. That's nice but if he likes
bush and what's happening to this country now then he is the enemy.

2. No thanks.
Bringing him into the white house was among the stupidest things Clinton did.

3. He's made INANE comments. Bush's character is "unquestionable...sterling"
Coming from Gergen before the Iraq war, those comments went a long way in the corporate media world we live in. It made it easy for even bigger suck-ups to build Bush into an even bigger hero for the public.

He may be coming around to a more clear view, but his comments about Bush's character then are the reason alot of Bush's actions went UNCOVERED by the media. Gergen gave them the cover they needed to to go on UNQUESTIONING Bush's motivations.

5. He's the only Republican I can think of
who had consistently criticized bush's policies. Yes, he's subtle when we would prefer him to scream from the rooftops but he has been putting it out there for 3 years.

Credit where due.

6. Toots, I get where you're coming from.
I cannot cite specific pro's and con's about Gergen's stances (unlike many learned folks here at DU) but I remember seeing various appearances by him on news show that I respect. I always appreciated hearing someone who's a little more centrist and not the typical hotheaded blowhard from the far poles...those other types are so common nowadays.

him, but he is honest.

10. Good OP, interesting
range of responses.

He's a smart man. He's pragmatic. He recognizes the danger of the neoconservatives. Yet he is still a cog in the republican machine.

The truth is that democrats and republicans, along with the majority of citizens, must begin to get along together in a different manner. We are in a position where we no longer enjoy the luxury of some of the old hatreds and hostilities. We have to move beyond them, or our culture will crumble in manners far more extreme than many are aware possible, and in a relatively short order. We aren't sitting on a fence, where some will survive while others fall by the wayside. And that being the case, I think it is important that progressive democrats work to the extent possible with people like him.
