A Poem: Katrina and a Slow Moving Bush
Katrina and a Slow Moving Bush

The Howling Wind ; The Rushing Water; The Silent Bush
I am a victim of a hurricane and a slow moving Bush
I was to poor to be evacuated
Some may say that I am under privileged
Well, I say What's that got to do with anything
I'm still a Human Being
Some may say they're scared because I've been relocated
And I say What's that got to do with you
I'm still a Human Being and I deserve respect.

I died in my flooded house
I died at the hospital while waiting to be rescued
I died without my oxygen, because of no electricity
I died in the Super Dome Arena, because I had no food
I died in the Super Dome Arena, because I had no water
I died in a tree, because of the stinging fire ants
I died because I couldn't swim
I died in my wheel chair
I died with my dog; I died along with my cat

I've been dead for days now and I'm still lying in the street
I've been dead for days now and I'm still lying in the water
I've been dead for days now and I'm still lying in this building

How could this have happened?
Why did they cut the funding?
Why wasn't their lives valued?
Is it because they were poor?
Because they were black?
Because they had no money?
Because they didn't belong there anymore?
Because the wealthy wanted the land?

3. I wrote a bush-Katrina poem too
Sinking the Ship of State.."The Little Captain Paces"

The little captain paces

Smiles are nowhere to be had
Everywhere he looks
The news is all bad
The journey's been one for the books

The little captain paces

Rumors of leaks spread
Get the buckets..bail bail bail
The listing ship is full of dread
The little captain's looking quite frail

The little captain paces

The coastline's out of sight
The ship used to be so strong
Confidence has turned to fright
What could have gone so wrong

The little captain paces

Nose first..down she goes
People claw each other to stay dry
It's sinking, and everyone knows
Some plead, some pray and some cry

The little captain no longer paces

Mad splashing is all around
Everyone's in the water , and how
Only one life vest is found
The little captain says "throw it here..NOW"

The little captain no longer looks at their faces

One by one they go down, with a kiss blown his way
Down, down, and finally under
The little captain's patience is beginning to fray
"Where is all my people?..I wonder..wonder"

The little captain is saved

They are back with him, as he takes note
He paddles to all his supporters
As he climbs on each, he embraces their bloat
He's so thankful there are no reporters

The little captain is still afloat

9. Thanks for taking the time to read it
this was a very hard poem to write. It had me choked up the whole time I was writing it.

Still gets me choked up, intend to set it to music in the near future.

11. Random thoughts
Not even sure whether to post this. What follows is something I've been working on, not as a poem or anything, but just a way to get my head around those events from a year ago. It's not finished, dunno if it ever will be

For the record, I appreciate your motivation and expression MM. My memories just get stuck in certain events which are hard to shake. :(

The early hours of a Monday morning brought with them
the rising of sunlight, wind and water.
Scampering with the calm of people familiar with loss,
those left behind dashed to higher ground
to weather the storm.

On Tuesday the waters receded:
time to breathe, time to wait.
Relief had come,
patience only needed
‘til the levee broke and the waters rose again.

Wednesday offered little reprieve.
Humidity and heat sunk deeper in the bone.
The last trickle of water failed in the morning
and the cries of desperate mothers flowed across the water
to fading boats which shouted “we’ll be back.”

Thursday brought more of the same.
Desperate for a breeze, those left behind
flocked towards the helicopters overhead.
White sheets and clothes were hung
from any rusty nail.

The dawn of Friday revealed a simple truth:
Those of us left behind could rely upon neighbors and ourselves.
“We’ll be back” and the promise of helicopters in the air
don’t protect your children.
At best, they’re good intentions."

It's not a poem, it's not anything, it is far from complete. Sorry to waste bandwidth, it's just floating in my mind still searching for some resolution.

12. It is hard to get one's head around such a tragic event like Katrina
with all the images we were seeing.

I like what you wrote and I hope you can continue to search for whatever meaning you need to find some sort of solace.
That was a difficult time in our history, and it still has had an impact on how we deal with the problem of our society.

Of course the Bush Regime/Cartel isn't helping in this regard.

The way the media portrayed the people who were trying to survive as being looters and the whole time they look the other way when the REAL LOOTERS are the contractors who have taken advantage of the taxpayers funds.

I know of a person who went down to offer help in the water purification process. He spoke to someone and offered to help with discounts, and the other person responded with the reply "Why would you offer discounts, this is government money, you should jack up your prices, not offer discounts."

Some people are really scum.

14. thank you
for posting this. i won't say it is a good poem, not because it is bad; no, it is more than good. the emotions and reality reflected of this terrible tragedy deserve more than "good". it should be pondered, absorbed and make us vow never to let something like this happen again.

15. I was alittle hesitant about posting
but thought I would see if anyone would have some insight on my emotional outpouring of that awful time in our history. I couldn't quit thinking about all the distressed people who were abandoned by our government.

It still makes me sick to think about it. I have Spike Lee's documentary recorded and trying to find the time to watch it. I'm sure it is going to stir all those emotions all over again.
