"Give us the truth! Give us the truth!-Salt Lake City Protests Bush Admin
Address by
Mayor Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson

Washington Square
Salt Lake City, Utah
August 30, 2006

A patriot is a person who loves his or her country.

Who among you loves your country so much that you have come here today to raise your voice out of deep concern for our nation - and for our world?

And who among you loves your country so much that you insist that our nation's leaders tell us the truth?

Let's hear it: "Give us the truth! Give us the truth! Give us the truth!"

Let no one deny we are patriots. We support our nation's troops. We are grateful to our veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. We love our country, we hold dear the values upon which our nation was founded, and we are distressed at what our President, his administration, and our Congress are doing to, and in the name of, our great nation.

Blind faith in bad leaders is not patriotism.

4. Utah has always had a strong underground
It's just that peoples' expectations and stereotyping around the nation have blinded them to Utah's true political past and present. The I.W.W. (Industrial Workers of The World) was practically made here, as it was in Utah that famed labor leader and troubadour Joe Hill rose to prominence before Utah assassinated him on a trumped up charge. Utah also was a main player in the suffragette movement. Another IWW leader, Big Bill Haywood, was a Utahn is the only Utahn to be buried in the Kremlin.

5. Salt Lake Tribune is reporting 4,000 protesters!
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_4261435
Thousands of anti-war protesters demand: "Give us the truth"

They came bearing banners, singing ballads and barking demands from the U.S. commander in chief.

Some 4,000 protesters streamed into Washington Square surrounding The Salt Lake City/County Building downtown to protest the war in Iraq and President George W. Bush, who was scheduled to arrive this evening for an appearance before the national convention of the American Legion.

A few blocks south, uniformed military veterans and civilians spoke in support of the U.S. troops at a 300-strong Freedom Rally in Liberty Park.

They clasped hands and sang out ''God Bless the U.S.A.'' Yellow ribbons printed with the phrase ''Support our Troops,'' hung from shirt pockets, baseball caps and American flags.

19. That is BS - there was between 6,000-8,000 - since they are reporting
4,000, I'd say 8,000 is right.

6. I was there too, the sound system was not so great so I'm glad to read
what Rocky said. I got to talk to him for a minute before the speech (god, we're getting old!) I'd hate to be married to, work for or have a case against Rocky but he's been a great mayor.

There was a great crowd.

(Another problem with hearing the speakers is it was so great to run into so many old and current friends and we had to catch up and dish on Bush. It was just like the 60s and 70s when we protested another war and for civil rights.)

I was just offered a ticket to see Bush tomorrow. They are passing them out in my office (state government). They are going begging. (Ha ha).

No, they are "Pro-War"

People who want to bring our men and women home are Pro-Troop.

Thank you, Hamlette, for being there. :toast:

11. The Salt Lake Trib is owned by a wingnut - big shock!
His name is Dean Singleton, and he owns several other papers in the Colorado area. He singlehandedly overrode editorial boards at his own papers, who wanted to endorse Kerry in '04, to endorse President Asshole instead. Any other questions?

7. All the speakers were great. Rocky Anderson Rocks!!!!!
I met some very nice people from all over the world. One guy from Nigeria and a sweet couple from Austria. Many folks took pictures of my signs and of course I represented my hero, Richard Pryor with one of his tee-shirts.

The local news is having a field day here in regards to Mayor Anderson's speech. All the comments he made about the news media, especially the local news, has them all fired up!

Go Rocky!

10. This isn't the first protest there
There was a big one there last spring, publicized by the city's Democratic mayor.

They're waking up in cities across the country. The rural areas are lagging behind, as usual, but they'll get there too.

If they can protest in Utah, though, it can happen everywhere. And it should.

14. The rally today was incredible!
I was surprised at how many people showed up on a weekday. There had to be around 4,000-5,000 people there. Rocky and his speech were very well-received (we SLC liberals LOVE him!). My nephew started a chant of 'Rocky, Rocky, Rocky' the first time around. My daughter ran around inside a giant Dick Cheney head wearing prison stripes, chained to W, Condoleeza and Rummy-another friend of hers. It was hotter than hell, but with a slight breeze now and then, which was nice. So far, the pro-Bush rallies have not racked up the numbers we did earlier today. I didn't catch anyone flipping the bird, but then again, I wasn't looking. Lots of honks, though. We're off to Rock Against Rumsfeld at Pioneer Park.
