Sen. Lugar discusses Iraq timetable

Indianapolis - The top US general in Iraq says Iraqis can take over security there within a year to 18 months. Eyewitness News spoke about that timetable with the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Indiana Senator Richard Lugar.

American soldiers may be able to leave Iraq during the next 18 months according to the top US general. Senator Lugar, who was in Indianapolis to speak to the Kiwanis Club, says it's important not to announce a specific date for the Iraqi forces to take control, but Lugar agrees with the 18-month timeline.

The US is expected to pull significant numbers of troops out of Iraq in the next 12 months in spite of the continuing violence, according to the general responsible for near-term planning in the country.

Maj Gen Douglas Lute, director of operations at US Central Command, yesterday said the reductions were part of a push by Gen John Abizaid, commander of all US troops in the region, to put the burden of defending Iraq on Iraqi forces.

5. If senator Lugar Axehandle was in Iraq fighting he might sing a
different tune...

Senator Lugar

18 months is a long time in a place where one day seems like a lifetime. I support the troops but Lugar don't care about the hell they are going through fighting for the GOP's everchanging "NOBLE CAUSE" in Iraq!
