The Reason Ted Stevens Says He Held Up The Earmark Transparency Bill
:spray:

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2006_08_27.php#009593

Why did Alaska GOP Sen. Ted Stevens (the $250 million "Bridge to Nowhere" Ted Stevens) say he's holding up a $15 million proposal to create transparency in government spending?

He's worried about the cost.

12. So the very "Pork Barrel Spender/Indulger" is the one who was holding up
the bill?

Wow, he has an absolute lack of integrity....what arrogance and hubris....

Bet Alaskans are real proud of him.... :puke:

11. Amen to that
He doesn't want anyone making any comparisons to other projects and the bridge to nowhere or the Anwar drilling.

No way, no how.

Suck it, Hulkman.

4. Did this make it to the greatest page?
We finally found out who put the blindfold on a Sunshine law and we're too busy talking about Mike Malloy? Aren't they both equally important?

The thread sunk like a rock. TPM Muckraker had a piece about it.

9. You know what?
A lot of people got hope from listening to Mikes (and his phone-in callers & guests) perspective on the issues of the day including this hold. Just the way a lot of people get hope from reading this board. No need to diminish it or even bring him up if you aren't particularly a fan of his type of programming.

5. Of course...
... $15 million is far too small sum of money to spend on something that will be used by all. It would set a bad precedent.

Far better to spend a quarter billion on something that can only be used by 50 people.

14. If anyone had asked me to make a guess as to who was holding it up ...
Senator "Gonna take my toys and go home" Stevens would be my best guess. As usual, Stevens doesn't disappoint when it comes to guessing who the biggest idiot is in such matters.

15. Less than two hours' cost of the Iraq war
But Sen. Ted doesn't have any problem whatsoever with the money that's being burned there.

20. My mistake . . .
The $15 million price tag is for five years, 2007-2011. The first year, it's expected to cost $4 million, which is just under half an hour's worth of Iraq invasion time.

How's that little expenditure working out, cost/benefit-wise Mr. Stevens?

Maybe he could show some fiscal conservatism with the money for HLS.
