Slaves didn't have "Masters"
They had enslavers or captors !...

Why do we continuously call the enslaver "Master"... He should appropriately be refered to as
Captor or enslaver...

The word "Master" continues to give the captor a certain sense of superiority..

I think this practice should be stopped.

Words do matter !....as our Regressive Rethuglicans have shown us !

off the earth.

2. Actually, they have "owners"
which pretty much displays what RWers consider about the value of human dignity versus money.

17. Right. And the slaves to were part of that ownership society.
...just to point out that in an ownership society, not everyone is an owner. It's generally a wealthy minority that gets to own 'stuff', including people. Though this is probably quite obvious to most on DU.

6. The enslavers and captors were those who
enslaved and captured. They were mostly Africans. Although some Arabs--and fewer West Europeans--got their hands dirty with the actual enslaving.

Of course, I'm not sure what to call the act of enslaving newborns, the 'natural increase' of the slave population. "Born free" seems hardly the proper phrase.

'Master' and 'owner' work fine, but refer (as do 'enslaver' and 'captor') to different things. The actual owner may have had little contact with the field hands in parts of the South, esp. on large-scale plantations.

The master did have a kind of superiority: he could beat his slave with little legal consequence, while if the slave beat back he'd be in serious trouble. Legally and socially, the master and owner, whether Arab, black, or white were superior.

14. I know what you mean......but I think
the word "captor" or "enslaver" can still be used correctly to describe the "owner"

15. We are being held hostage?
We are not enslaved, nor are they our masters. So then we are temporarily captive, just waiting to be released?

I like the term 'Hostage' as in held hostage to the e-voting, the M$M lies, and the big money, which for the time being holds power.
