1. Strictly infotainment....
The choice of a fluffy morning person is not a good sign. There will be no struggle for journalistic integrity--she's never had any.

12. True. Some come from the AM shows of late. They are basically
nothing more than news readers with an occasional location shoot. Evening News is only selling ads and looking for ratings. There is no rhyme or reason to hire Couric for a last place station than to get ratings. But give Brokaw a little more respect than Couric. He was a news reporter, many times oberseas, before he went to the Today Show and was very select to make sure Jane Pauley did most the fluff.

I'm switching over to ABC.

But it will be interesting to see if she makes it. I just have this feeling that she is going to crash bigtime.

9. What few viewers CBS now has will soon be gone after Couric's debut.
She's fluff, no substance. She is going to start off by interviewing the most unpopular man on Earth, George Bush. That will set the tone for her "career" at CBS. With disapproval ratings soaring, why would you want to start with such a loser? People want Bush to go away. People also want Couric to go away. She'd be best on an "Entertainment Tonight" type format, rather than hard news.

10. You know, I used to watch CBS news exclusively
But now that Brian Williams has shown some backbone as a reporter, I think I'll switch to NBC and dump CBS and their perky turkey.

15. Major drop for CBS
If there is any more down for them. Ultimately the newsreader is irrelevant - it's the Corporate owners that control the "news".

Such as Viacom

25. Not a chance. From what I've seen, Couric's not interested in actual news
Never was. Never will be.

Also gives me another chance to post these lyrics
I know it's Fleetwood Mac (I personally love the Mac, but some don't,)
but Lindsey Buckingham rocked on this song.

Murrow Turning Over In His Grave

All the sainted sinners
They pay handsomely
M S C A E they make the weapons
And they run the prisons
And they sell the justice
'Cause being guilty is just good business
Well we're standing out on the borderline
Ain't no one here gonna stop it now

Murrow's turnin' over in his grave (Murrow's turnin' over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild
Murrow's turnin' over in his grave (Murrow's turnin' over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild

Half-closed eyes and unconscious death
Do you feel the ooze as your brain drains out
From the pneumatic drills and sharpened knives?
Blood in the sky are you dead or alive?
All the restless people and the bitter green
Well, it takes the gold makes the spirit mean

Murrow's turnin' over in his grave (Murrow's turnin' over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild
Murrow's turnin' over in his grave (Murrow's turnin' over in his grave)
Ed Murrow had a child the damn thing went wild

The song ends with Buckingham doing a guitar solo with incoherent yammering
of news talking heads in the background. I can't make out any
real words, but I can tell that it's a bunch of vacuous news heads talking about
useless crap.

Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 01:30 PM by keepCAblue
Leave it to the MSM to airbrush Couric to look 20 lbs thinner. And why not? I mean, hey, they doctor the news every day don't they, so what harm is there in photo-shopping a promo photo of little Katie of Sunnybrook Farm? (it's only when it's the Lebanon MSM that it's wrong :sarcasm: )

30. Last time I watch K. Couric was when she drilled the hell out of Michael
Moore when he was interviewing for his movie. She was ruthless...and did everything she could to make him look bad.

I will NEVER watch her - and hope she fails hopelessly. I loved Dan Rather, and hate what they did to him.

36. I voted "Yes"
Evening news viewership has been going down for a long time.

If this new approach actually gets more people to watch the news, that is a great thing.

I do NOT expect that people who pay close attention to the news will learn much from Ms. Couric's show, just like we dont learn much from watching Charlie Gibson or Brian Williams.

43. I'm not a big Katie fan. I don't think she has the chops to interview
political figures. There are other men and women in several news agencies who do it better.

Katie Couric may drive more progressives to the web to get their news.

It's not personal. I just don't think she's that good.
