Visitors scramble as water shortage shuts Tofino businesses
CBC News

An extreme water shortage has prompted the Vancouver Island community of Tofino to order all local businesses closed by Friday, leaving tourists and wedding parties scrambling to make alternate plans for the last holiday weekend of the summer.

The order issued Tuesday is intended to help preserve the remaining water supply. It applies to all hotels, restaurants and other food service businesses in the district.

Tofino is now drawing on a backup reservoir, but that water must be boiled before it is considered safe to drink.

Meanwhile, the local tourist bureau is telling people to stay away, and hotels and motels are cancelling reservations, including at least three weddings.

... Even though Vancouver Island's west coast is considered a rain forest, the District of Tofino's main reservoir on Meares Island is very low because of a two-month dry spell.
