CBS Caught Doctoring Photo To Make Katie Couric Thinner...

CBS Whittles Katie Couric's Waist In Doctored Photo
TVNewser | Brian Stelter | Posted Tuesday August 29, 2006

Unbelievable catch by Brian Stelter at TVNewser, courtesy of an eagle-eyed tipster: CBS visibly altered Katie Couric's photo in its "Watch" Magazine, slenderizing her waist, arms and neck. Yowsers! TVNewser id's the first photo as Katie's official CBS photo, taken at the upfronts in May. Let's hear it for transparency and accuracy in the news! Paging Adnan Hajj...

71. Why don't they just pay her to take her shirt off? That would get....
the ratings up. She's a friggin' news reader. A 3rd grader could read the news. The rest is just fluff. So get her to strip and people will watch. However, the other networks would follow by getting a young, non-frumpish 20 year old to do the same and that would end Katie's "journalism" career.

68. I read somewhere that Stalin had intentionally bad photo doctoring done
If you look at an old photo and see that certain people have been rubbed out, it serves as a useful reminder to others that they can be 'shopped away too.

They seem to have doctored away Stalin's smile in the process.

50. Compare the backgrounds, they simply scaled her dimensions
from side to side. It also shows in the neckline of the dress. Unfortunately they kept the facial features the same width, which gives her that Joker-esque smile and weird neck wattle.

I've seen better Photoshop...Hell, I've done better and I'm not very good.

Oh, and yes, cleaning up the jaundice was a good idea.

Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 11:13 AM by Atman
It simply isn't possible for a wider space to appear between her arms and waist by just scaling the pic across the horizontal axis. Her hands are still the same size, too. As are her facial features, while here neck has been sculpted away. Also, contrary to what you think you see, the background is actually slightly wider in the re-touched photo. It may not be perfect, but it sure a pretty darned good retouching job.

I don't think she looked heavy in the first pic, but the second looks more in line with anorexic TV standards... remember, the TV camera EASILY adds an extra 10-15 lbs, so anyone who looks slender on TV is most likely VERY skinny in person.

On one of our local t.v. channels, it shows a black lady posing for the picture, and smiling. She's a bit chubby in that picture, but then the "after" picture is shown, along with her announcement that weight loss was so easy for her. Apparently, judging by the before and after photos, losing weight also caused her skin to lighten about 6 or 7 shades. Who knew losing weight caused people to change so drastically?:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

32. The fat one is the original...
...look at the corners of her shoulders. On the fat pic, the fabric of her suit jacket has definite points where it is bunching up (shoulders, lapel, elbows). That's the first thing that would jump out at a photo editor, so they were smoothed for the skinny pic. Likewise, they smoothed the bump in the fabric on her hip out, to make the whole thing look more tailored and sleek. And upon zooming in, they didn't copy the pinstripe pattern on that hip...it's a solid mass or black where it was edited. So it looks like they shrank the whole thing by about 5% on the X-axis, color corrected, cleaned up the bumps, and cinched her waist. And it's not even a good matte between her arms and body...there's a slight outline.

I HATE bad Photoshopping.

67. And Katy Couric is a cheerleader for that war
a first rate propagandist with great legs. This doctored image goes against her credibility as does this set of non-questions for Michael Moore:

COURIC: You use images of Iraq before the invasion. And if I recall, you have pictures of, film of children playing in playgrounds. You sort of hear the sounds of children laughing.
MOORE: Yeah.

COURIC: You have people eating in outdoor cafes. But even people, Michael, who are vehemently opposed to the war would tell you Saddam Hussein was a tyrannical despot—

MOORE: Mm-hmm.

COURIC: who killed people—

MOORE: Mm-hmm.

COURIC: for absolutely no reason.

MOORE: That’s correct.

COURIC: A murderer.

MOORE: Mm-hmm.

COURIC: And wouldn’t your movie have been better balanced if you had at least included some about Saddam Hussein’s own reputation?

MOORE: You guys did such a good job of telling us how tyrannical and horrible he was. You already did that. What—the question really should be posed to NBC News and all of the other news agencies: Why didn’t you show us that the people that we’re going to bomb in a few days are these people, human beings who are living normal lives, kids flying kites, people just trying to get by in their daily existence? And as the New York Times pointed out last week, out of the 50 air strikes in those initial days, the—we were zero for 50 hitting the target. We killed civilians and we don’t know how many thousands of civilians that we killed. And nobody covered that. And so for two hours, I’m going to cover it. I’m going to—out of four years of all of this propaganda, I’m going to give you two hours that says here’s the other side of the story.

57. Sorry, but when you're charged with reporting national/international news,
You don't mess around with photos. It's a "credibility thing." We now have a right to ask, "what else has been "air-brushed/'doctored'" for our "consumption?" Sure, you can fool around with photos for gossip rags, tabloids, and glossy weeklies, but not for a news network whose reputation needs to remain beyond reproach.

And the same thing goes for the written text...

61. CBS cops to altering their own official Couric photo in a CBS magazine.
From AP article on MSNBC site:

The touched-up photo of Couric dressed in a striped business suit appears on the inside of the September issue of Watch! which is distributed at CBS stations and on American Airlines flights...

...Gil Schwartz, executive vice president of communications for CBS Corp., said Wednesday in a phone interview the photo alteration was done by someone in the CBS photo department who “got a little zealous.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14584870/

NBC had nothing to do with it.

64. Her whole body got altered, including her face.
Her arms and face are obviously thinner. There is no fricking reason for this. She looks fine the way she is. Is CBS selling news or size 2 dresses?

65. Great. More fuel for the anorexia fire. Our adolescent girls are screwed.
The rampant "lookism" in our society is killing our children.

69. Anorexia affects a very, very small percentage of people
worldwide and existed before television and before Twiggy. It is one of the more misunderstood psychological disorders. It IS found in males also--where is the media role model for that? There isn't one. True anorexia has almost nothing to do with media images. It is more akin to OCD.

72. Lookism doesn't just result in anorexia.
Of course it existed before television and Twiggy. I absolutely agree it is more akin to OCD, but that does not mean that media images of desirable body shapes don't contribute. Ask any psychologist who has been practicing for more than thirty years if they think lookism isn't a contributing factor in anorexia.

We're sending a dual message to our adolescent girls that looks are paramount and they have less power than the male. One of the few things they have the ability to control is their weight. That's a recipe for disaster.

1% of American adolescent girls with anorexia (4% with bulimia) may be a very very small percentage to you, but it's enough young women to warrant my concern.

Doctoring a photo of a perfectly normal and healthy middle-aged woman is demoralizing and degrading. I'm sick of it!
