A very nice encounter at the doctor's office
So I'm sitting in the orthopedic surgeon's waiting room, and a mother with three kids comes and sits next to me. The talk is all about picture books and lunch and soccer pratice - all the usual mundane stuff. I bury myself in a magazine, when suddenly the elder boy (about 9 or 10, I would guess) decides to tell his mom about the colleges he'd like to go to. Here is the conversation that ensued, starting with him naming them off:

Son: "Um, Syracuse and Duke, I think."

Mother: "Those are fine."

S: "What about Michigan State?"

M: "That's OK."

S: "Indiana."

M: "Fine."

S: "Maine."

M: Really good - your dad I I like the state of Maine quite a lot."

S: "Texas."

M: "No."

S: "Why not."

M: "Too hot, too far, and too many Republicans."

I saw them again in the parking lot, and I went up to her and said: "Excuse me, but I was sitting next to you in the waiting room and when you told your son Texas was a no because of too many Republicans it made my day. Thanks!" She laughed, I left, and the day was that much better.

Nice.

Actually, when I used to travel for work a lot I saw quite a bit of Texas. I just don't care for it - climate, topography, etc.

I"ll take New England for a million dollars, Alex. :)

28. It's not Texas I dislike
It's the climate.

Rates up there with Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Missippisi, Lousiana, Southern California.

Love the food, hate the great numbers of psychos who live there.

I think it the OP's point had more to do with them than the actual place itself. Though the mosquitos, palmetto bugs, scorpions and Republicans would keep me away.

Dem born and raised in Texas but living now in Iowa. He is very quiet about *co and truly doesn't like **anyone** to mention the creature is from Texas - because he really isn't. And I doubt that Maine would claim him either. He has no home. No one will claim him. Poor boy.

27. The bush family uses Texas as a tax break. No state income tax
here. Pinhead will probably sell his pig farm after he's no longer pRes.(it was only a prop to begin with), but just like his parents, he will maintain a residence here, for tax purposes.

It was an experience I would never repeat.

We have a name for people like you as well.

Reactionary whiners.

People have a right to their opinion. Deal with it.

It's one of the great things about our formerly free country.

Lot's of people don't like Seattle either, but I am not going to sit here and attack them for it.

33. Please don't be so angry
I don't think it was the OP intention to bash TX - it just happened that the story worked out that way....could have been any number of red states - I thought the story was great and it made me smile.

So I'll add one to it and there are no states involved:

tonight my seven year old nephew was telling me some story about football practice - something about "them" making him do up and downs for no reason and that they were Geroge Bushing him - which in our family means they were lying to him....now that's funny - I still have no idea what the other stuff was all about but roared with laughter at the George Busning him statement - kid will be President one day.....

The Sheriff of Dallas County is a Democratic Hispanic female who is also a lesbian.
Texas isn't that red in the cities...it's the rural areas that need enlightened.

30. Rural Areas - Not
Actually, the urban dems and rural republicans often vote as a block against the suburban republicans (think Tom Delay republicans) in the Texas legislature since they both have lots of poor people and bad schools. This doesn't happen as often as it should, and I'm hoping that Delay's problems will lead to a weakened right wing.

BTW - living in Williamson County, the suburbs of Austin with no Democratic officeholders is sort of like living in Disneyland; nice but sort of sterile.

BTW 2 - I grew up in the Northeast but enlisted in the USAF in 1969 and ended up in Texas for most of my time. The people in San Antonio, mostly Mexican-American, were such nice people that I came back to live in Texas in 1984.
