NBC Expresses Regret for Air-Crash Skit
By LYNN ELBER
1 hour ago (Approximately 7:00 PM Eastern Time)

LOS ANGELES - NBC expressed regret Monday for an Emmy Awards comedy skit that included a mock plane crash and aired on the network the evening of a fatal Kentucky jetliner accident.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the many families who lost loved ones in the plane crash in Kentucky on Sunday, and to the entire community that has suffered this terrible loss," NBC said in a statement the day after the ceremony.

"In no way would we ever want to make light of this terrible tragedy," NBC said. "The filmed opening during the Emmy telecast was meant to spoof some of television's most well-known scenes. The timing was unfortunate, and we regret any unintentional pain it may have caused."

The prerecorded skit was broadcast as part of the live Emmy ceremony just hours after a commuter jet taking off in Lexington, Ky., crashed into a field and burst into flames, killing 49 people. Only a co-pilot survived.

Did you see the Emmy show? What did you think about this skit?

The timing was unfortunate, but this was no way intentional.

2. The timing was unfortunate, other than that it's a non-story.

3. NBC let's Ann Coulter call Al Gore a "fag".
And does not apologize.

The opening of the Emmy Awards, which was filmed ahead of time, unfortunately coincides with a plane crash earlier in the day and people go apeshit crazy. What is wrong with this country?

4. Yes, the plane crash was a tragedy...
but I don't expect an apology from a network every time an actor
fakes a coronary, thus reminding me of my father's death.

When your pain is fresh (and even forever more-- for some of us),
those scenes are too painful to watch.

I just change the channel.

5. I didn't know there was a plane crash yesterday
until I heard this news story, and I did watch the Emmys. If I had heard about it earlier I would not have connected the two. Planes crash.

6. It never even crossed my mind.
Do you think family members of the victims were watching the Emmys?

7. It crossed my mind - yes, and made me not like the skit
but I put it past me and watched the rest of the show. I do think they could have pulled the sketch (it wasn't funny anyway) though. I don't personally find plane crashes very funny anytime.

10. When I worked at NBC, I recall that the news department asked the

advertising department to cancel any airline-related advertising -- at least for a time -- after air crashes.

There was also a crash of a World Airways jet in the 1970s. The plane went into the end of the runway wall in Boston Harbor and I had to handle that terrible event during one of my air shifts on WEEI, a CBS owned-and-operated station. It was pretty tough, but that's talk radio.

Don't know what the policy would be about comedy skits. This is a first time I've heard of something like this.

8. Who gives a sweet one about the Emmys anyway?
Talk about a waste of time.

9. Accidents happen all the time. Should the next question be:
"Should 'Lost' be allowed to be on TV?"
"How about a movie about Flight 93?"

The entire opening depended on that bit.

13. Should NBC have apologized at all?
It was a truly unfortunate juxtaposition.

12. I thought it was a very funny skit
The crash was tragic, but the skit was obviously filmed far in advance. Of course the timing was the best, but life goes on for most of us. I dunno why there is outrage over nonsense like this given how insulting every White House press conference is.

14. Why did they apologize?
It was pre-recorded. Let them apologize for supporting Bush all this time.

15. If they knew about it before air time, it would have been better to nix it
Let's face it, those award shows are always too long and looking for ways to cut down the time. Had they announced that the plane skit was dropped because of the crash viewers would have understood.
