15. Alright, I've got 3 servers running it now.
Including an AMD64 w/4GB ram that's doing absolutely nothing else.

May add more later. Why not.

3. Well, we'll never catch up to the Freepers.
But we can give it a go. The Freepers are using company computer networks to do this. Of course, this is good for folding, but not too good if corporate policy forbids it.

I have three CPUs running 24/7 and an occasional two other CPUs contributing to this project.

4. In my case it was a comupter disaster
and now I don't know the team number, so I can't donate to the team. I've looked on their site and they're big on showing usage by team name, but small on giving the team NUMBER, something they require. You can't sign up with the team name. You can only sign up with the top secret number.

Woops.

13. Your computer's excess resources
can be used to solve math problems and calculations that can be used for medical research. It only uses the excess resources when you are not using it. Lots of personal computers working together can be an affordable way to research.

16. It is a BOINC application.
You know about SETI@Home?

It is an exercise in highly distributed computing where individuals can download packets of data from the Arecibo Radio Observatory in Puerto Rico. You then process the results on their computer in the background of other processes that may be going on with special software which performs signal analysis looking for extraterrestrial candidate signals. Once a packet has been fully processed, the software automatically uploads the data to the main server and downloads another work packet. It's pretty cool because there is an analysis display that shows you graphically what it's doing.

Well, since then, other similar data crunching applications have come out in the same model, one of them is Folding@Home which analyzes protein folding data. I'm not sure about the specific application, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with medical/pharmaceutical applications.

All of these applications are now handled through what is known as the BOINC client, which basically serves as a launch/management console for all of the experiments you participate in. It allows you to join teams of experimenters and your contributions are added to the aggregate whole. Right now there appears to be a Folding@Home team for DU which is lagging far behind the Free Republic team because of inactivity (you don't have to be running the client all the time, I guess some people have shut it off for extended periods). So if you're interested in helping out, check out the link provided on the top post and see what's required for participation.

Hope this helps.

its main floor is 14 foot ceilings, 12 on the second and 10 on the third....

the house is 6500 square foot, has servants quarters, 40 x 18 living room, 9 bedrooms, and was built by a surgeon in 1880, by architect James P. Johnston of Ogdensburg NY.

24. You'll need help filling all that space!
When can I move in?

is it original, or has it been re-modeled inside?

1880 makes it Pre-craftsman, looks almost like a Victorian-Craftsman blend. very cool.

25. it is in the town of Brockville
In southern Ontario, 1 block from the grand St. Lawrence river, and at the mouth of the 1000 islands. Maybe 40 minutes south of Ottawa... if you know Canada. Brockville was founded in 1749 by loyalists, so there is some crazy homes here...

The only thing inside, other than the appliances that is new (ish) is some carpet which we figure was added in the 1950-s or 60s, and it is just in the main hall and main stair case. The roof is original slate, and has a diptych pattern in it. The roof is by far the biggest of the repairs we are undertaking. about 70k to get it back to original with modernized eaves and a weeping tile around the house to secure the stone foundation from seeping. There is a full servants quarters with three additional bedrooms, alas sans windows... the servants quarters have secret staircases that show up into the master bedroom's closet, and another to the third floor.

The stone foundation is 36 inch thick, which is completely crazy and the house itself is triple brick. We just moved out of Calgary Canada, after cashing out on the insane property values there (double house value in one year) we got this place for a song in an estate sale. The inspector we hired was a heritage home restorations expert and he said the house is exceptional and will stand another 500 years with the roof repairs and weeping tile.

We have about 4 years in doing renovations to our own homes, but nothing like this, the last house we owned was a 1977 four level split... so you can imagine we are excited. The electrical is updated except for the third floor, which is still knob and tube, as we plan to completely gut the third floor and turn it into a 1700 square foot office for our design company, with a widows walk. ;)

okay okay, I know, enough... I move in in 60 hours now... its all I can think about...

go FOLD DU'ers!

I am versed in all phases of construction, especially fascinated with historical restoration, I don't eat much, I'll stay in the servants quarters, you'll hardly know I'm there... Honest!

31. Two of our machines are out of service this week... sorry.
We have had to replace a couple of major system components on the two iBooks that normally run our folding stuff. They've been down for 2.5 weeks now and may be out of commission for another week if the parts don't get here. Having them on risks a fire. (They're old and the power sending unit that is on the inside of the case from where the power plugs into has been acting flaky on one, and I don't want another housefire.)

35. No matter what I tried, the client made every PC i tried it on crash.
Systems that are completely stable for everything else I use them for. Even running them in low priority mode did not help. I tried it on 3 different computers, and it crashed all of them. The new Seti@home client does the same thing.

So until they can get this problem fixed, and it is a problem many people have, I won't touch it. I can't be there to restart machines every 2 hours.
