“The Iraqi Security Forces and the Iraqi government are in the lead in planning and conducting these combined operations,” said Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, commanding general, Multi-National Division – Baghdad. “We continue to work alongside them in their endeavors to reduce sectarian violence, which has resulted in a 36 percent reduction of murders across the city of Baghdad since we began earlier this month.”

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Violence in Baghdad has dropped by nearly half since July, after U.S.-led forces launched an operation to pacify the capital, a U.S. general said on Monday, while acknowledging a spike in bombings in the past 48 hours.

The daily murder rate had dropped 46 percent from July to August and car bombings were at their lowest rate for eight months, he said, while noting a spate of car bombings and shootings at the weekend which killed dozens.

2. Guess the insurgents must be overjoyed about democracy
God, these lying thugs make me sick. Yeah, put Sadr City on lockdown, and things will calm down for a few days. But can you KEEP millions of people in lockdown? No, you cannot.

3. That bit about the car bombings is a bald-faced lie...
Car bombings in July in Iraq -- 2,625

Car bombings in January in Iraq -- 1,454

This general who said that is just another bullshit artist putting the best spin possible on a failing war -- even if he has to lie to do it

4. Great! 10 days from now the whole country will . . .
Be at peace and the soldiers can come home! I hope those transport planes are already warming up on the runways. We can leave the equipment, it's all wrecked anyway.

5. I heard an American general say on NPR last week...
...that if you only look at death statistics in Iraq than you're missing out on all the good stuff going on there like an American embassy being built that will make Saddam Hussein's palaces look like a trailer park. All being built with money that could have helped Katrina victims though.

the assholes running this war would have fallen on their swords long ago.
