Poll question: Would you advise a kid to get interested in politics?
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 09:01 AM by bryant69
I don't know exactly how to ask this question; I suspect that for most of us walking away from politics isn't really an option - we're going to continue to be involved and engaged because that's the sort of people we are. But imagining you were advising a young person and you were pretty sure this person would listen to you, would you advise them to get interested in politics or to take up another interest?

1. I'd advise them to be sceptical of all things - especially politicians.

2. If I did
I'd make sure to remind that kid that they should be ready to fight the same fights over, and over, and over, and over again, because they never go away. They may change shape, but they don't go away. Every war bleeds into the next war, and there is always a next war. Oh yeah, don't expect to be represented by anyone. Organizations and institutions think and talk for you. In a world of and for the large, individually you don't matter. You're one of either a couple hundred thousand people(in the case of the House), or one of a few million people(in the case of the Senate), so don't think they'll listen to you unless you have something they need(like a last name, or tons of money). Go protest too. Make signs, chant slogans in the street. That really has a great hold on world events, especially if those protests are brought to you by Verizon Wireless. Not forgetting to say that they can change the world if they work hard, and most importantly, concentrate enough power to be able to have your voice mean anything. Go for it.
