One of the only "political" moments at the Emmys (No spoilers)
Helen Mirren included some comments in her Emmy speech that I thought I should make a point of.

She mentioned that women consist of 50% of the population in the world, and that 9essentially) women need to be recognized for a much larger percentage of the real talent in the world, specifically for writing. It is definitely a bold move to say that, and I actually have to pause and wonder why.

It is the 21st century--the beginning of the third millennia CE, and women are still considered second class citizens in many parts of the world, as well as not having equal rights in many other parts, including what is supposed to be the greatest superpower in the world.

When is this going to come to an end? When are women going to finally realize that we ARE equal to men in every sense of the word, and in some areas, we even surpass men. The one thing they have which we don't is strength--and that is physical strength only. I don't think I could see too many men having a baby, or having the strength to go through menstruation every single month, year after year. They couldn't handle it!

Women have to realize that if we continue to speak softly, we will continue to be victims, and we will remain second class citizens eternally, until we are once again regarded as property or worse. It is only when women finally open their eyes and look at that sordid future that they might get a little more bold and aim higher than we have ever aimed before.

Other nations worldwide have had no problem dealing with women in positions of command, even though those moments have been few and far between. But the fact remains, they have happened, and how sad that the U.S. continues to be so mentally backwards and chauvinistic to deny women equality in the most real sense of the word.

Helen Mirren was speaking about writing in her speech, and yes, it is about time that more women are represented in the world of writing. How can we improve our careers in publishing if the only women writers out there are romance writers, schlock writers and worse? There are very few women authors who can hit hard and can sell books that mean something more than solving the crime of the day or wishing that handsome hunk #2 ends up with the lissome lass #1. It is only when women can outrank men in even the most strenuous genres of all that we will realize we have made it. Perhaps the trick is to create, like J.K. Rowling, an entire universe of our own and make it the biggest bestselling series in history. Perhaps we can create our own television and film projects and simply make them the best the world has ever seen. Whatever we need to do, we DO NEED to DO IT.

Women need to show that they ARE equals to the men in the world, and they need to make NO compromises on their way to proving it.
