When the Levees Broke by Spike Lee
Did anybody else catch this show on HBO? It was really well done. They are showing it again on the 29th (I think).

1. I saw, and taped, the whole thing. Excellent piece of work.
For anyone who has On Demand with their cable service, I think it will be available on 8/30 or right around that date.

again....so I can see the last two segments..

It is powerful and it is irrefutible.....the * cabal can't twist the footage or the truth on this one....

3. I don't receive HBO, so I'm just waiting (impatiently) for the DVD

release! As much as I would like to agree with you that the *cabal can't twist the footage or the on this one, well I think that they will manage to spin it somehow.

edit: nasty misspelling

4. I watched.
I wish he had been harder on Bush. He never showed the cake eating with McCain and the guitar strumming appearance in San Diego, while the worst destruction from the result of Katrina was going on. I guess he has his reasons though.

5. Discovery Channel's SURVIVING KATRINA is a major punch in the gut.
I saw Spike's When the Levees Broke and was very impressed and I learned alot about New Orleans.
But I'm watching Discovery right now and man oh man is it hard. I've been cryin and my heart has been racing. It puts you there.

6. Me too.
I am a native New Orleanian and now live north of the lake. I was without electricity for weeks after the storm and have never SEEN film of any length of the city underwater. What struck me was what the Charity doctor said. When help finally arrived the guards said they were there to re-establish order -not to help. These medical professionals had been through hell and the doctor said he was given the impression that New Orleans had disappointed the nation. All I could think was, I am sorry but this nation has disappointed the citizens New Orleans more. My heart is broken for my city and the nation I once thought of as my own.

10. Hi Swamp Rat!
I am watching them all. I buy every book. I must be a masochist. LOL! I really think my heart IS breaking. Are you in the city? If you need a good video, be sure to see "Song for New Orleans". It was very uplifting and hopeful. It is about the Rebirth Brass Band and was produced by WDSU.

11. yep
I'm here, but it ain't easy. Thanks for the heads-up on the WDSU video.

I made this as the city filled up with water while my mom and dogs were missing. Fortunately, my mom and one dog survived:

13. I am so sorry you had to endure that.
I was SO lucky. My entire family evacuated to my house (dogs, cats, and all) because I was the farthest north and west. I KNEW everyone was safe! I hope you didn't have to suffer the unknown long.

14. Just three days
then we found my mom. According to her, she was one of the last few cars that made it over the Crescent City Connection, riding on two flat tires - then the Gretna police started shooting at people. Luckily she found some tires at a junk yard on the way to Thibodeaux. I spent weeks of sleepless nights trying to recover my dogs.

We're all back home trying to rebuild now, but it is a very slow process. At least we have a new roof, though it leaks.... hurricane Ernesto had us all really nervous.

17. Hey, Swamp Rat-
I just wanted to tell you that I am very moved by this picture you created during the storm. It is taken less than 1/2 mile from my former home. I recognize all the roadways and landmarks. Thank you for sharing it- you are so gifted...

I also wanted to let you know that I am praying for you and your family. And I'm so thankful that you still have one of your furry kids.

16. Welcome to DU, doctorj!
:hi: nice to meet a fellow native New Orleanian! Although I now live in Houston (moved here in 2001) my home will always be New Orleans. My former home got 6 feet of water in it and had to be gutted and rebuilt, by the new owner.

I am so very sorry for all that you have been through, and hope you are faring well now.

Spike Lee's HBO documentary was riveting, and I will try to catch this Discovery Channel show as well. Like you, I had not seen any lengthy footage of the city, while under water, and Mr. Lee's film had me glued to the TV. I was recognizing all sorts of places; my heart just broke some more.

12. Truthful documentary
What I loved about it was that it let the citizens of New Orleans tell their own stoy. It was a very balanced account of what happened. My most memorable moment was Mr Payton bringing his mom back to her home for the first time. That was Gentilly Woods. It was where I grew up.

15. That is near where I volunteered to help
I worked in Gentilly Terrace inspecting houses and then made maps for Gentilly residents.
