LES CAYES, Haiti - Ernesto was downgraded to a tropical storm Sunday afternoon but the Miami-based hurricane center it was expected to strengthen again and potentially reclaim hurricane status before reaching the southeastern coast of Cuba Monday morning.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for the entire Florida Keys — and warned further watches could soon be posted for other parts of the state. Visitors were ordered to leave the Keys on Sunday and Gov. Jeb Bush issued a state of emergency.

Earlier on Sunday, Ernesto had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and barely maintained hurricane strength. It weakened throughout the day and had winds of 60 mph by late afternoon.

5. I don't know which I would rather have to deal with our tornado's
or the Hurricanes. either one would be no fun.

4. Thank God. I hate these things.
I bought a few provisions at Costco today, and am going to stock up on gas and propane tomorrow during my lunch break. If it looks bad tomorrow night, I'll be boarding up the windows on Tuesday. A pain in the hole, to be sure, but a good precaution.

8. prolly a silly question but do you save the boarding up material
from one time to the next or are the incidences so far apart as to make it not feasible

10. Most people use sheets of plywood
which is fairly expensive now a days.

If you have the room, most people store them.

11. It would definitely be the thing to do.
tornados don't give us any options for safeguarding. if you get hit you're gone.

14. We do save it. The plywood...
...is cut for each window, and screwed in to the wall around it. After the storm, we store it in a corner of the garage. Not a silly question at all! It would be pretty wasteful to chuck out all of that lumber, not to mention the time involved with cutting each piece to fit properly.

6. Once it gets over the Gulf of Mexico it's going to get much more powerful
Those warm waters in the Gulf are like lighter fluid on an open flame.

12. Hurricane Charley was a category one over Cuba
And was not expected to strengthen. It slammed into Lee & Charlotte Counties as a Category 4. Go figure.

15. I seem to remember a storm named Katrina that was a category 1 IRCC
that passed over FL and then became a monster storm, or perhaps it was a category 1 after messing with FL. Just saying.

7. Our guard should not be let down just yet
This thing will most likely refuel once it enters the gulf.

9. I was seeing water temp map here the other day and it had the
area warmer than it normally is so I worry. the last thing we need is another diaster to have to depend on the bush* cabal for help or answers. what a failed crew they are.

18. Thats bad news for sure.
If their is a water temp anomaly on the warm side in the Gulf, then all hell is going to break lose sooner or later once it reaches those warm waters.

17. Interesting how the weather forecasters
on the tv don't even know Cuba exists. I wonder how Cuba is preparing for the hurricane? Their government does not leave the people to die, abandoned in a hurricane.
