If you think the first part is bad wait until you watch him in the second part...he asks the most remarkably strange series of questions of a woman who is witnessing the entire catastrophe. This has to be watched to be believed...they cleaned it up a little on the CBS DVD which had been issued a couple years ago, but the raw footage is striking.

This is why you can't have these infotainment types doing the news.

1. I missed all this, being at work in the WTC

at the time. Our coverage was a bit spotty that morning.

Obscene stupidity.

This is the first time I have been able to watch.

There was a lot of misinformation, chaos and rumors going around that day. Plenty of reasonable people had a hard time separating fact from rumor on that day. Among the rumors I remember on that day:

* A car bomb went off at the State Department.

* A crowd of Arabs was seen in New Jeresy celebrating the attack.

* The Border Patrol sealed the US border.

* A plane was hijacked over Alaska.

* 8 planes were hijacked.

I'm not commenting on the info or lack of...I'm commenting upon his utter lack of comprehension of the evolution of the event. He was temporally way behind us...I was watching him on that day and we were all, patients and staff, screaming at the set in my dental office. It was unbearable to deal with the horrors: the one unfolding in front of out eyes and the one playing out behind the microphone.

My assistant was saying "Are you BLIND?" The lady just said there was an explosion and the plane had deliberately hit the tower. He arrogantly questioned each of the people's surmise that it was intentional. It was like: "How do YOU know?"

OK Bryant, it was a random series of events that two planes on a perfect day hit the Towers. What a schmuck.

5. I have never found

Bryant Gumbel to be a mental giant. I have found him to be an arrogant, officious jerk. I have a DVD about 9/11 and it has his shameful work.

I remember that one, too.

There were all sorts of stories coming in. I was getting ready to drive into DC that morning, and it was hard to know quite what was going on there for a while!

was our government doing between the time when the first plane hit and the second, Gumbel and the woman were discussing which areas of the building was on fire and then the other plane comes in where were the fighter jets?

Interestingly, anyone who watched that great C-Span symposium a couple of weeks ago noted the 'call to AF 1 story'. Wow...that was really something.

reading a book about a goat. Cheney was gloating and preparing to be carried to his bunker, and Poppy was having a champagne breakfast with Osama's brother.

And the entire air defense was standing down because Cheney told them it was a fucking DRILL.

the DVD that CBS put out a few years ago showed that and then quickly cut...gumbel had lost his job but they wanted to show what a moran he was.

because that was the day he started smoking again after having stopped for 20 years. And he was a class act, IMO.

15. I always had mixed feelings about Jennings...

I knew from personal experience involving intimates of mine that his personal life was really sleazy when it came to the women who worked for ABC. That being said, I couldn't take Rather's dissociative personality disorder or Brokaw's speech impediment. So I watched ABC most of the time.

But I switched to CNN during the 9/11 crisis when I got home. Weirdly, b/c ABC did have better coverage. I switched back the next day and for the ensuing weeks.

16. I was in my car listening on the radio that morning

I'm usually tuned in to local talk. I was listening to KDKA in Pittsburgh and since it was radio I had no idea of the weather in NYC that day. When they reported the first plane and were reporting it as a small plane I naturally flashed back to the B-25 that hit the Empire State Bldg in the fog and wondered if it was foggy in NYC. If I had seen the clear weather I bet I'd have figured it out as terrorism. But get this - the idiot CNN radio reporters were speculating for a couple of minutes, even after the 2nd plane hit, that it was some glitch in radio guidance that caused these planes to crash in to the towers - like any sane pilot would let that happen! As soon as I heard a 2nd plane had hit I was in the car screaming "F'ing Terrorists".

I find many of those in TV and radio reporting are freakin' idiots.

KDKA that morning had a sub host in who was also less than stellar. I tuned to the other talk station at the time - WPTT - where the 3 hosts there did coverage all day. Of course they got many false reports, like Camp David had been destroyed. Thankfully we have a TV at work that gets 1 station(NBC affiliate) so I kept running down to the lunch room all day to check coverage.
