Kevin McKiernan

Kevin McKiernan discusses the plight of the Kurds who live in Northern Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria. As part of his talk, Mr. McKiernan looks at the atrocities committed against the Iraqi Kurds by Saddam Hussein during the 1980s (with the support of the U.S. government), the abandonment of the Iraqi Kurds after the 1991 Gulf War, and the leading role that the Kurds are playing in Iraq today. He also talks about the repression faced by Kurds living in Turkey and the clashes between the Kurds of Turkey and the Kurds of Iraq. The talk was hosted by MIT's Center for International Studies. 2. The President's Counselor: The Rise to Power of Alberto Gonzales
On Saturday, August 26 at 10:00 am and Sunday, August 27 at 3:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The President's Counselor: The Rise to Power of Alberto Gonzales
Bill Minutaglio

Bill Minutaglio discusses his book, "The President's Counselor: The Rise to Power of Alberto Gonzales." In this biography, Mr. Minutaglio chronicles the public and private life of US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. He examines his childhood and describes how Mr. Gonzales became one of President George W. Bush's closest colleagues and friends. Mr. Minutaglio says Gonzales has been loyal to President Bush for many years, hushing up Bush's drunk driving conviction and backing him on Texas executions. More recently, says the author, Mr. Gonzales has written policies that defend and authorize the torture of suspected terrorists.

Bill Minutaglio is the author of "First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty." He has written for the San Antonio Express, the Houston Chronicle, the Daily Morning News and the New York Times. As a journalist, he has profiled Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Timothy Leary, John Belushi, and others. He has worked at the United Nations and the United States Department of Agriculture in Harlem.

31. I can't believe someone wrote this book.
Who do you have to be to write an appreciation of Torquemada?

32. I'm not sure about this one...
His publisher says he writes with "precision and fair-minded balance"

Most of the reviews I've read are like this one. No one says it's great, hard to get through but lots of detailed facts.

Family Man, November 16, 2000
Reviewer: R. Walker - See all my reviews
Bill Minutaglio tells the W. story mostly in the context of the Bush family, which strikes me as the right strategy. Bush himself likes to put forward a simple version of his life, but the truth is more interesting: Not just the West Texas childhood, but the adolescence shuttling back and forth from Houston to Andover, etc. First Son gives a sense of the privileges of a family like Bush clan, but also a sense of the expectations. Along the way Minutaglio provides a bit of a crash course on Texas politics, also useful in understanding Bush, his allies, and his enemies. The result is a story told in a fairly straightforward, nearly newspaperish style, and while it's slightly repetitive, the underlying material is good enough to make it a quick and engaging (if not very deep) read. Minutaglio seems fairly determined not to make any overt judgments about his subject, so the book ends up a sort of Rorschach test. It may reinforce whatever views on Bush you have, but I doubt it will change many minds. It's not a classic, and I doubt this will be the last word on Bush, but First Son is a good distillation of the W. story so far.

33. After watching for a while, he mentioned he was under contract
to write this. And he didn't look very happy about having to spend all that time with Torquemada (mentally, I mean).

How many jobs would you rather do, Viva? I'd rather grade math papers. :)

46. 'smut' in this case... is a fungus
that grows on corn. Black, powdery, stinky stuff. If the cows eat it, they get sick. So you walk through the field, and hand pick the bad ears before letting the cows in to feed.

Not nearly as fun as what was going through your head!

37. This man is an incredibly good speaker. He's the first person
I've ever heard talk about combat in such a clear way. Without softening or without avoiding. He talked about using torture to interrogate a detainee and he spoke with unblinking honesty. I want to read his book.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whose Freedom?: The Battle over America's Most Important Idea
George Lakoff

In a talk at the Commonwealth Club, George Lakoff says the United States is divided by two dramatically different worldviews on the notion of freedom. As he explains in his book, "Whose Freedom?: The Battle over America's Most Important Idea," progressives and conservatives have different value systems that expand the notion of freedom in opposite directions. According to Mr. Lakoff, progressives encourage social security, the minimum wage, universal health care, and college for all -- ways to guarantee freedom from want. Comparatively, he argues that conservatives believe giving people things they haven’t earned creates dependency and robs people of their freedom. Includes Q&A.

George Lakoff is a linguistics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a senior fellow at the Rockridge Institute, a progressive think tank. His research includes many areas of conceptual analysis within cognitive linguistics as it applies to politics, literature, philosophy and mathematics. He was an adviser to Howard Dean during Dean's 2004 presidential campaign. George Lakoff's books include "Metaphors We Live By" and "Moral Politics."

11. Traipsing Into Evolution: Intelligent Design and Kitzmiller vs. Dover
On Saturday, August 26 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, August 27 at 6:30 am and Monday, August 28 at 12:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Traipsing Into Evolution: Intelligent Design and the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Decision
John West and Casey Luskin

John West and Casey Luskin respond to Judge John Jones's written decision in the case Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District. The case was a challenge to the Dover, Pennsylvania school board's decision to make students aware of the theory of intelligent design. Judge Jones ruled that the board's policy violated the Constitution because intelligent design amounts to little more than a religious theory. Mr. West and Mr. Casey review the case and argue that the theory of intelligent design is based on science not religion, and that proponents of intelligent design want to challenge the teaching of evolution on scientific grounds not religious ones. This event was hosted by the Discovery Institute in Washington, DC.

John West, senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, is associate director of the Institute's Center for Science & Culture and associate professor of political science at Seattle Pacific University. His books include "The Politics of Revelation & Reason: Religion and Civic Life in the New Nation" and "Celebrating Middle Earth: The Lord of the Rings as a Defense of Western Civilization." Casey Luskin, currently an attorney, was a researcher at the Scripps Institution for Oceanography from 1997 to 2002. He is is co-founder of the Intelligent Design and Evolution Awareness Center (ideacenter.org).

13. The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing GWB from Office
On Saturday, August 26 at 11:00 pm and Sunday, August 27 at 8:15 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office
Dave Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky

Dave Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky are co-authors of "The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office. At a symposium held at Robin's Bookstore in Philadelphia, the authors argue that President Bush's administration threatens basic freedoms and the American system of checks and balances. The co-authors review several of what they consider impeachable actions by President Bush, including lying to Congress about the need to invade Iraq for possession of weapons of mass destruction, refusing to cooperate with the congressional 9/11 Commission probes, and obstructing justice in protecting the person responsible for revealing that former Ambassodor Joseph Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, was an undercover CIA operative. The authors suggest that impeachment should be a key issue this election year and impeachment legislation should be submitted to the next House Judiciary Committee.

Dave Lindorff is a journalist who has written for numerous publications, including BusinessWeek, Salon, and the Nation. He's also the author of three books, "This Can't Be Happening!" "Killing Time," and "Marketplace Medicine." Barbara Olshansky is an attorney for The Center for Constitutional Rights. She is currently managing habeas litigation on behalf of 300 detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. She is the author of "Secret Trials and Executions: Military Tribunals and the Threat to Democracy."

The Storm: What Went Wrong and Why During Hurricane Katrina -- The Inside Story from One Louisiana Scientist
Ivor van Heerden

Ivor van Heerden talks about his and his colleagues' efforts to protect New Orleans against hurricanes prior to 2005 and their investigation into the cause of the flooding in the city after Hurricane Katrina hit in September 2005. Mr. van Heerden argues that state and federal officials largely ignored plans that would have protected the city and then tried to jam up scientific investigations into the cause, forcing him and other scientists to go directly to the media. He says that the condition of the levies in New Orleans are still poor, leaving New Orleans vulnerable as the next hurricane season approaches. The talk was hosted by Octavia Books in New Orleans.

Ivor van Heerden, who teaches civil and environmental engineering at Louisiana State University, is cofounder and deputy director of the LSU Hurricane Center (www.hurricane.lsu.edu) and director of the Center for the Study of Public Health Impacts of Hurricanes.

Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina and the Color of Disaster
Michael Eric Dyson

In "Come Hell or High Water" author Michael Eric Dyson criticizes the U.S. Government's response to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The author argues that the Bush administration and FEMA's failure to provide aid in a timely manner is another reminder of the deep class and racial divide in America. He analyzed the problems displaced survivors of Hurricane Katrina are facing today, and debated if the storm was caused by God. This event was hosted by Eso Won, an African American bookstore in Los Angeles, California.

Michael Eric Dyson is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His books include "Is Bill Cosby Right?," "The Michael Eric Dyson Reader," "Open Mike," "Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur," "Why I Love Black Women," "I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.," "Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line," "Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X" and "Reflecting Black."

Dyson is terrific, and this was no exception. This is a scathing review of poverty in this country, and as Dems, I can't believe this was of no interest.

Please, someone, take the opportunity to at least watch the recorded verson on the website, and comment, eh?

59. I LOVED this segment. It was astonishing. There was a real
discussion about inclusiveness that broke out when a lady in the audience said she didn't want to have to think about gays in NOLA. And Dyson handled it like a CHAMP. I swear, I'm going to buy his book just because he did not back down and he was not hostile. He was simply strong, clear and consistent.

68. Inclusiveness??? What's that?? ^_^
I'm definitely going to have to watch that part again--thanks for mentioning it!

Yes, I admire his style. It's obvious he has a great deal of self-confidence, and I .. well, I envy that. It's so much harder to deal with attacks when one doesn't have that kind of self-confidence. It isn't that easy to come by in this society.

I'm trying to get through "The Gentle Art Of Verbal Self-Defense", but so far it doesn't address the things I normally am faced with.

Hmmm, wonder if Dyson would give lessons on that... ~~chortle~~

OK, I'm not really chortling... I think there's a huge need to help people learn how to handle those situations!

Verbal non-violence... what a concept! :hi:

67. This was Interesting, Complicated--A Different Theory
A little while ago, after all of C-SPAN's endless parade of Lincoln festivals, and Lincoln forums, etc., I started wondering, Why the hell don't you people ever give us a Roosevelt forum or appreciation?; give us something on Franklin or Eleanor Roosevelt, from those who know about and love them. Just recently, there was, finally, an announcement that C-SPAN/BookTV was going to cover the 2006 Roosevelt Reading Festival: the program was on a book about the Republicans, during the 1940 campaign. Fuck you too, assholes. This one is a little better; it is a study of the Great Depression and New Deal policies--by a Republican. Further, it was shown during the middle of the night, 2:45-3:30 AM Eastern time, followed by a gush-fest over that phony disaster Milton Friedman. Fuck you too, assholes.

Regardless, this was a very interesting talk, complicated, and gave some new opinions about the cause of the Depression, some possible cures for future ones (such as the one we are having now), etc. The author, although a History Professor, not an economist, has a personal background with at least one of the Roosevelt Admin. people, Raymond Moley, and seems to have some understanding of things, although tainted with an admitted Republican filter. First off, the author does not believe that the Depression was caused by the stock market crash of 1929, which may be unique, but gave a very good explanation of other causes. They are hauntingly similar to situations and conditions today. Elliot Rosen believes the direct cause of the Depression was Britain's devaluing the Pound Sterling, which was the official world-standard currency then, not the dollar, to try to protect Britain's economy. (Note that Bush today is over and over again, devaluing the dollar, to allow for unregulated, unfettered capitalist investment around the world from the U.S. I live in Michigan, and notice the dollar as opposed to the Canadian dollar: when Clinton was President, the Canadian dollar was worht about 63 cents; now it is like 90.) Other causes given were over-extension by corporations with bad investments, rising corporate profits at the same time as stagnant purchasing power and wages, and the failure of the economy to change and adapt from an old, heavy-industry, textile and agricultural/farm economy, to the then-new service and technologies economy--just like the more-current, wrenching change from manufacturing of the modern type to, now, service and "information technologies," banking and investment, etc.; a Depression brought on by failure to keep up itself. The devaluation of the Pound was given as the main, actual cause, however; it was interesting.

It was annoying, though, to listen to a typical Republican failure to give credit to the Roosevelt Administration for ending the Depression, winning World War II and causing no post-war economic depression, which had never before happened, although this one was better than most, and the book actually seemed interesting, especially today, when "Hoover II" is bringing on the same thing, all over again, with a nightmarish return to the days of "Government Will Not Help You." One thing was wrong, though--the recession of 1938-39 was described here as caused by incrasingly "anti-business New Deal policies," whatever that means. To quote from a really good book on the topic, "The Thirties: America and the Great Depression," by Fon Boardman, Jr., (p. 111), "It is more likely the recession came about because certain New Deal policies had been abandoned. In June Roosevelt, who still in the back of his mind was just as traditionally addicted to the virtues of a balanced budget as Hoover had been, had cut relief spending. Federal Reserve System policies at the same time tended to restrict credit, while social security taxes were beginning to take spending money out of paychecks." It continues that when new public works programs were then instituted, the recession ended and recovery continued. The author did, however, mention the suspicion that many have always had--then as now--that corporations deliberately tried to make the New Deal fail by refusing to invest and create jobs, when they might have. This is why Roosevelt famously held the opinion that bankers, and investors on Wall Street, are "crooks"--because, this is what they are.

The programs and Federal departments of the Roosevelt New Deal saved this country from Depression, has until now protected us from any further economic collapse, and built this country up as the greatest, richest and most equitably distributed, with the most powerful and influencial middle class, insuring a government emphasis on help and fairness, infrastructure building and maintenance, and a stable standard of living, with corporate activity regulated under law, to stop, or punish, corporate crime and exploitation. The author, although I did not totally agree, as presented during this C-SPAN talk, made an interesting case on this very complicated--and suddenly now again pressing, urgent issue--and I think I will read through the book, and maybe buy. We suddenly need these answers again, as they needed answers during the '30s, and we will never get them from this treasonous group of neo-con/capitalist Republicans, ripping everything all to hell, for their own profit. There is a great thread currently on DU General, called "Experts warn U.S. is coming apart at the seams" & bush ignores the issue." This BookTV discussion is of the same type. God help us; we need a New Deal.
