Repub admits the GOP has been hijacked over the past few years

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2006/08/bush_gets_dc_ou.html#more

<snip>

As a longtime moderate conservative, I just want to say folks like John D DO NOT represent most of us even-keeled Republicans. It's unfortunate that in the last few years, our party's been hijacked by these vitriolic people who only can react in one way to differing opinions: spewing venom on those they disagree with.

Most of us Republicans are open-minded folks, as I'm sure most on the opposite aisle are. Sure, I disagree with them on the war, but most of us do not operate on one defensive mechanism: hate, resentment, insult, just because our ideologies differ.

4. conservatism is a lie. and it is, inherently, a very hateful and cold
ideology.

And it is all about kissing ass to the wealthy and to big business.

5. yeah in that sense, but a true conservative is one
who conserves like $$, environment etc..

I know pissing into the wind, but I always remind my rethugs friends who throw this word around of what conserve means

6. you know how they conserve money?
by slashing taxes for the very wealthy and for businesses, imposing "fair taxes" like a 33% flat tax or a very high national sales tax.

They give huge tax breaks to corporations because they "create jobs".

And, most of all, they spend on defense and war and shit like that, but save money by spending almost nothing on social services or domestic programs, and privatize roads, hospitals, schools, fire and police departments, etc.

The fact that people like John Dean and Lou Dobbs has even some liberals pining for "true conservatives" makes me sick.

Conservatism hasn't been hijacked or corrupted.

It was always corrupt.

its just one of my major pet peeves. And I see it all the time here, on a Democratic / liberal board.

Its evidence of how far the right has shifted the debate, they have tricked people who are socially and economically left into saying "I'm fiscally conservative", without really thinking about what it means.

8. sure it has..anything you say
Now if you could just remove the jack boots from my throat...
I don't care. Its way too late for that, GOP.
If you really were displeased you would either quit the party or correct the situation.
I hold all Republicans directly responsible for the class warfare their party is waging against me.

9. That's bullshit
They hven't been hijacked - if anythign they've been liberated.

I'll admit that Bush hasn't been good (by their terms) in holding the line on government spending on on shrinking the government - i'll even admit that his foreign policy might not conform to what the isolationist wing of the party might like - but that was the deel they made. The deal they chose to make - to crush liberals.

Claiming they didn't really mean it now? Nonsense.
