Bush to widow: "No point" in talking about the war
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2006/08/25/bush/index.html

On his way to vacation at his parents' compound in Kennebunkport, George W. Bush stopped at a local elementary school Thursday to meet with family members of U.S. troops who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. After the meetings ended, Hildi Halley, whose husband died in Afghanistan in June, said she told the president that it's "time to stop the bleeding" and "swallow our pride and find a solution."

Bush's response? Halley said the president told her that "there was no point in us having a philosophical discussion about the pros and cons of the war."

bush couldn't have a philosophical discussion about boiling water let alone the intricacies and nuances and total package which is war.

And poor lady. A republican swallowing his pride and finding a solution? Its not in their DNA.

I think he could have that discussion, he chooses not to do so. I really don't think he is the dimwit we would very much like to portray him as being. I think is very, very intelligent, suffering from drug use and a frat boy attitude, but not stupid.

He may have a little IQ, but he sure ain't showing it. Any person with a brain would know the war is just a terrific waste of blood and treasure and would be re-adjusting the policy.

This is super cold and calculating. I don't see how he can sleep being such a prick.

89. I am done with giving him a free pass....
What is this he is not that "stupid" BS? Like somehow this guy is a freaking genius in disguise.

He was a C- student, he turned every business venture he touched into a mess, he has done the same with the US government. He is a lousy father, an even worse public speaker, he is unable to put coherent thoughts on the fly when the situation requests it, he is unable to enunciate correctly, etc.

So yes, pure genius. What he is, he is a connected, spoiled brat, with little to no conscience, and a sense of entitlement unparalleled since Luis XIV. He has very good handlers, and he is but a puppet of a far darker and more sinister background organization.

He is able, and merciless, he has had the right connections all his life, he is intellectually lazy, and that is pretty much it.

He is not smart, he is not even remotely average when it comes to thought potential. Trying to think this idiot son of an asshole is somehow intelligent, is an insult to my intelligence (pun intended)

93. I could possibly see "average intelligence"
but "very, very" - never. Personally I'm not sure he's even of average intelligence - he's failed at every thing he's ever done. I wouldn't want to "misunderestimate" him, but I think if he was even of above-average intelligence, it would become apparent at some point. I've never seen it in him.

Of course, I've never seen the "charisma" some people think he has, either, but I think that's more personal. Intelligence would have to show it's face SOMETIME.

suggesting that the whole semi-literate goofus thing is an act calculated to appeal to...uh...semi-literate goofuses. I wonder how Joe Nascar would feel if he thought that the preznint was condescending to him like that. What am I thinking...he'd still get down on his knees and thank Jesus that W was fighting against queer flag burning.

122. "Intelligence" can be defined
in a variety of ways. When one examines *'s genealogy (Prescott and Poppy), you can see that the kinds of issues that "he/they" have promoted for 3 generations each have had to connect with a core RW kernel representative of an authoritarian mindset within each specific era to be effective.

I think that Bush is smart in a diabolical, sociopathic and relentless way. His role as a "war president" was probably mapped out a long time ago, per PNAC dictates. The "good-ole-boy" schtick is finally wearing thin, though, as even MSM pundits speak to more and more.

The idea that he "will not leave Iraq as long as he is prez" continues to concern me as January-2009 is quite a long way off.

The ability of a newly Democratic House 1/'07 to begin impeachment proceedings remains a big hope.

Imagine if we had a real media who weren't afraid to question the president? A media that would dare to show the flag-draped coffins as they came home every week? Heck, a media that raised some questions before the war would have been nice.

What a cold response, though.

The GOP strategy for success. Bushigula is the embodiment of GOP thought disorders and loose associations. Serial killer with a license is also part of the Bush character.
It's really about sex. They are fearful of exposing emotions and thus their personal relationships are wanting. These folks are always angry. I believe it was Jackie Kennedy who said you really don't know how good it is to be a Democrat unless you've been a Republican first. Most of them could use products made by Fleet. They are the party of dildos and prostitutes.

26. Right after the debacle of Somalia....
...which was initiated under GHW Bush, which later became "Black Hawk Down." It was reported (by the rightwing nutcases) that President Clinton had told the kin of MOH winner SFC Gordon (after being rebuked by Gordon's father) that "he didn't kill the kid."

Well, that turned out to be false, but in this case, it was absolutely true and shows the world how effed up Little Monkey is.

31. If you read the original article in the Maine paper
it is followed by the most incredible suck up Freeper comments you could see! And vicious attacks on Democrats esp Kerry! They call in a Viet Cong sympathizer! Also, in the article itself the father of a slain soldier says how wonderful it is that someone like Bush could take 20 minutes to talk to them. It showed how wonderful he was! He says he has always supported Bush and this shows how much he cares about each and every family! Excuse me? His son died and he is thrilled about 20 minutes? This is brainwashing at its worst.I want to be ill.

57. It's cognitive dissonance. People who have lost loved ones
want to believe it was for a 'noble cause'. If they acknowledge there was no noble cause, then they're faced with doing something about it. It's much easier--less painful and life altering-- to believe your son died for something.

106. Absolutely. But I'm still at a loss to explain
the millions of 22-year-old CR frat boy types who haven't enlisted, aren't going to enlist, and don't know anyone else who has enlisted, and who still think that the war is the most incredible, wonderful thing our country has done since D-Day. Cognitive dissonance is at play, along with a heapin' helpin' of redneck-style macho posturing. They're like the dorkwads who spend the entire damn work week yammering about the previous weekend's football games, all the while referring to their favorite teams as "we." The war is that, just kicked up a notch. OK...several notches. Still, they get to blather on about all the Ay-rabs "we" killed, but they don't have to miss a single Dave Matthews Band concert.

a copy in a time capsule might be a safe idea. Text and tape. Tape and text. Time, place, audience with mention of it in a newspaper or tv as back-up. You know how they tried to canonize Reagan. And we can't trust corporate propaganda networks to keep archives.

There are many types of intelligence. I'm not sure in which way some people think he is smart. He has no social and diplomatic intelligence. He is the consummate backslapping, cheerleading, frat jerk who has been suffering from arrested development for 50+ years.

We can take pleasure in knowing that the unhumbled jerk is not a Democrat or Independent and the entire world knows it.

Beware of this jerk who can swagger while sitting down AND while chewing with an open mouth AND while talking down with the head thrown back AND while speaking to the Prime Minister of Britain - AND speaking in crass statements.

Beware of this jerk who might grab you from behind to rub your shoulders while you are speaking at a diplomatic meeting.

Beware of this jerk who rubs the heads of a wide range of men and boys.

Beware of this jerk who sneered at and refused to pardon a fellow born-again criminal who appeared to be sincere in her appeal for mercy.

The world knows and shall know. It will all be documented for posterity if anyone with the time can put it together.

Bush-fart-olicy - a policy inspired by a particularly amusing presidential fart. Generally used at State of the Union addresses and Katrina related photo ops.

Pretzel-fart - a serious life threatening fart of rememberance. Emmitted every time Poppy tells the story of his bailing-out-on-his-buddies-WWII-story.

I hope y'all get the 'drift'! Personally, the stench is too much for me, I'm bailing out.... Geronimo-oo!!!

I am amazed that there is anybody who still thinks this man is a "people person" and "humble and down-to-earth". It doesn't seem to matter how nicely you address him -- even calling him "Mr. President" (which he likes), or being part of a group which would surely deserve an ounce of respect (bereaved parents, or WTC volunteers). Very, very disappointing.

117. This is a balloon
It is a lead in to the "new" repug-nik rhetoric into the war. Defining opposition as "philosophical" belies the working class opposition to it and is an effort to try to paint opposition as "liberal elites" and College professors. Look for the republicans to begin using this more often as November draws near.

It is important to counter this right wing spin with regular repitition of more recent polls against the war. At the same time we must remember that it was the Republicans that stabbed our soldiers in the back by not providing them adequate protection gear, giving them a mission that made no sense and did nothing to stabalize the it, and cutting veteran benefits repeatedly over the objections of the democratic party and the families of those that have served and those that have fallen.

127. Try telling that to the conservative right, Georgie
As opposed to the insane right. They're saying this: You can argue that McCain is wrong about building up more troops, and you can argue about whether a timetable is the right thing to do. But you can't argue that "stay the course" is a viable alternative. It's clear idiocy.

Having Shays come out in support of a timetable is going to shove a knife into the ribs of the hawks. He's been as hawkish as Lieberman, and now he's in full retreat. Watch support for the "stay the course" attitude evaporate this fall. Bush will be left on his own, and extremely vulnerable if the Dems take the house. Or maybe even if they don't. The Repukes who survive this election will have an even tougher one in two years.
