I can't believe we nearly forgot..... DU is five years old today

I just got home from work and I guess we were almost too busy to remember that today is Democratic Underground's fifth birthday.

Yup, it's five years to the day since Skinner and I stood out in the rain on Pennsylvania Avenue, holding our DU banner and hurling insults at George W. Bush, along with the thousands of other protesters who went to his first inauguration.

I guess this little site has come a long way since then :)

We really wanted to celebrate by unveiling our big new upgrade - the DU Journals - today, but unfortunately circumstances outside our control (we're waiting on a new server setup) made that impossible. We hope to have the upgrade done soon though.

But I just bought a bottle of wine, so I'm going to crack it open and drink a toast to all of you.

I can't believe that it was only 5 years ago that I stood out in the rain along the parade route. We cheered for the UNC marching band, since they were marching in the regalia/parade. In fact, we got the anti-bush crowd to cheer heartily and scream "Tar- Heels... Tar... Heels..." as the band went by. After they were gone, it was back to screaming at the bushbots walking down the parade route.

I look back on the pictures that I took that day, and I wonder what kind of person I would have been if I hadn't gone up to DC that day. It definitely showed me that I wasn't alone. For me, DU keeps that feeling alive. So :toast: Here's to Democratic Underground!

Its the day I joined DU. I saw that banner and it was like a ray of hope. I cant even express how alone I felt that day. Sitting here with my Republican ex-husband who was nearly as giddy as a little girl, watching that farce of an inauguration.

The VERY minute I saw that banner, I logged on immediately, and was SO grateful to find out there were other people out there who hated the idiot as much as I did. (Bush, not my ex :silly: ) What an amazing feeling. It really helped me keep my sanity.

Ive been here, at least long enough to read the headlines, usually much more, just about every day since then.

Hope things are different then and I can go back to 'the other side of the aisle'.
It will be nice to engage in civilized and actual debate where both 'sides' mutually respect facts, logic, truth, and most importantly... each-other.

When that day actually comes in this country, and the real conservatives take their party back... or create a new one, I'll remember that DU was part of the reason that happened.

And even if I get into heated debate over how to balance the federal budget (not 'whether'), or how to enhance the education system (not destroy it), or even why it might be a bad idea to be too strict with corporate controls (rather than enabling corporations), I will always be grateful for the service that DU provided to this country.

Oh... and of course if I'm debating 'liberals' on gun control issues I will not be too modest or noble to point out that for most of a decade even liberal pacifists were seriously considering the need to own firearms. ;)

But I'm glad that when so many other psuedo-Republicans lost their minds and followed the chimp and company I had a place to go where there was still courage and sanity.

besides the discussions, the best thing about DU is that it serves as my primary news source . . . with 83,000 members, whatever is reported anywhere in the world very quickly makes its way to DU -- often well before anyone at CBS, NBC, ABC, or CNN hears about it . . . similarly, pretty much all of the best commentary from across the globe is posted here as well . . . I read news and opinions from Great Britain, Russia, Australia, China, Canada, and virtually every other country that has a news outlet . . . thanks to DU, I consider myself to be about as well informed about what's happening in the world as one can possibly be these days . . .

so thanks, DU . . . and thanks to Skinner, EarlG, and Elad . . . this is by far the most important website on the net, and it may just help save the nation and the planet . . .
