Dumbass Bob Sheiffer on CBS News Called Plan B an "Abortion Pill"!
WTF is so hard to understand about the difference between Plan B, an emergency CONTRACEPTIVE, and RU486 a means of aborting a pregnancy? He asked the question, "why do we need another abortion pill"!!! to their new medical correspondent. Who never corrected him!

OMG and this is a fucking NEWS channel.... :argh:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Facts About Emergency Contraception

http://www.arhp.org/factsheets/factsaboutec.cfm

The term “emergency contraception” (also known as “the morning-after pill” or “postcoital contraception”) refers to contraceptive methods that can be used to prevent pregnancy after sex. Methods currently available include 1) a ‘dedicated’ product (approved specifically for emergency contraception) called Plan B® that contains synthetic progesterone, 2) high doses of commonly available birth control pills that contain synthetic estrogen and progesterone, and 3) insertion of a Copper T intrauterine device, commonly called an IUD.

Emergency contraception offers an important chance to prevent an unintended pregnancy when a regular method fails, no method was used, or sex was forced. Research has shown that emergency contraception is extremely safe and effective and can reduce the chance that pregnancy will happen after a single act of intercourse by between 75 and 99 percent.

1. It wasn't by mistake
There aren't any mistakes.
It is done to throw red meat at the fundies....give them something to protest so they can proclaim a new war on Christianity.

13. Politics aside, I find her repulsive.
No man should be cute after 12, and no woman should be perky after 16.

14. Isn't it a "zygote doesn't attach to the womb" pill?
I've heard that the mechanism by which this works is it keeps a fertilized egg from catching where it's supposed to grow in the birth canal.

Apparently this is a process that happens quite often naturally...and is why pregnancy *doesn't* always happen even if sexual activity occurs during ovulation. I don't know if this is right, but apparently the fertilization almost always happens if sperm are present ... the implantation phase is the factor that actually gives the pregnancy a chance at not occuring.

18. not quite
Plan B, like bc pills, is supposed to prevent ovulation-- there shouldn't be any zygote at all.

19. No, it prevents fertilization in the first place
It's no more an abortion pill than a normal birth control pill is. The "morning after" pill acts the same way as a birth control pill - by increasing the hormone progesterone, which prevents pregnancy.

2. It's really pathetic, isn't it?
Plan B is progesterone, just like a bcp, and interferes with ovulation, keeps the sperm from fertilizing the egg, or keeps a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

RU-486 is mifepristone, which dramatically decreases progesterone levels (high after conception) causing the pregnancy to abort.

It's not difficult to understand the difference if these idiots would just do their homework instead of reading talking points from the WH.

8. Fertilized egg = baby
By keeping the fertilized egg from implanting, the pill is considered an "abortion" to the people who actually think an embryo is where life begins.

This of course, completely ignoring that embryos are naturally expelled from the body all the time.

4. Well send out mass literature. Dr.'s need to be outspoken on this
and not the idiots who are paid by Bush. They know it has nothing to do with abortion. It is a b.c. plain and simple. I am tired of an agenda that wants to hurt women, demoralize women, make them evil in some way, while glorifying a rapist or the man who knotches another one on his belt. I am surprised though, men would benefit from this pill. They wouldn't be tied to any oopsies.. with DNA technology, a lot of men will be paying out the nose for all the oopsies they have inspired.

11. Women have been taking the "Morning After Pill" for over 30 years
You are on birth control pills. You forget to take them for a day or two and then you have sex. What do you do the "morning after"? Stop taking your pills because you "might" have conceived? Gimme a break. You DOUBLE UP on them.

For all those "worried" Fundies so concerned about women's health, I say that I took high dosage BC pills decades ago every day for fifteen years. When I did double up these pills, I would venture to guess that the added dosage most probably was what is contained in Plan B.

I am still here. I am not dead.
