Jail Overcrowding Leads to Two Arrests in One Day For Manteca Crook
Written for the web by Tim Daly, News10 Reporter
Need proof that the San Joaquin County jail is overcrowded? According to Manteca Police, his name is Marcus Pantoja.
The 19-year-old (shown above) was arrested Tuesday morning in Manteca after officers allegedly found him breaking into a car. Since officers know the charge wouldn’t keep him in jail for long, Pantoja was cited and released instead.
But Pantoja didn’t need long to get into trouble a second time. Later that afternoon, just two blocks away from the scene of his arrest, Pantoja was arrested again -- this time, for allegedly breaking into a home.
Following his second arrest, Pantoja was finally booked into the county jail.
Manteca police chief Charlie Halford said the overcrowding situation is very frustrating, not just for him, but for officers on the street who make these arrests.
