Next Week: Please Read This!
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 07:31 PM by CrackpotAmerica
I know that there are literally hundreds of issues that we must focus on in this dire time in American History. However, I feel that this is absolutely the most critical issue for us to focus on and oppose at this time.

Next week, Cheney, Bush, and a gaggle of other douche bags are planning to blitz the media in an attempt to bolster public support for the removal of their first an fourth Amendment rights..

There is a good article about it here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,,-5559333,00.html

On Wednesday, Bush, himself shall make a public visit to the NSA to reinforce his blatant lie pertaining to his supposed "Constitutional authority" to conduct warentless, unregulated, unilateral, and utterly secret wiretaps and spy activities on whomever he sees fit.

Mr. McClellan has deemed it as a "stepping up" of efforts to "educate the American people." Further proclaiming this travesty to be a "critical tool" to protect American citizens.

Well, friends, I am here to say today that if the President's Wednesday "visit" go unabated and without the presence of any overt and blatant opposition by American citizens, it will signify the OFFICIAL turning point of American government from a Democratic government of separate but equal powers to an OFFICIAL FASCIST STATE.

In this debate, what people are NOT saying is that in all actuality, THERE IS NO DEBATE. The Constitution of the United States, in its 1st and 4th Amendments directly and unapologetically DEFINE OUR RIGHTS AGAINST THIS CRIMINAL ACT BY THE PRESIDENT.

Not only was our Constitution framed to protect our sovereign nation from external tyranny; it was framed to PROTECT US FROM TYRANNY FROM WITHIN ANY SEPARATE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT, Including and ESPECIALLY THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH.

• On wednesday, please take the time to call, write, or visit your Senator and Representative. Tell him or her that you OPPOSE THIS ILLEGAL ACT.

• Speak to your conservative friends and acquaintances. Remind them of their irreplaceable and inherent rights under the Constitution.

• Write your media. Express your opposition to the President's actions on the day he wants to clutter the news with his dubious visit to the NSA.

• Place a sign outside of your home with the 1st and 4th Amendments written on it.

Do whatever you can (within the law) to show your opposition to this President. For, if he is successful in having a quiet day on Wednesday, it will LITERALLY BE the beginning of the end of your right to do so.

First Amendment of the United States:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Fourth Amendment of the United States:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I carry the Bill of Rights in my wallet. I would suggest that everyone do the same!

6. SOMEONE! Explain to me!
WHY is this so important to them? I really, really don't get it. WHO are they spying on that they can't get a warrant for? WHAT are they gaining by spying on these unwarrantable people?

Honestly, their desperation doesn't add up to me...

The only thing that makes sense to me is if this is basically symbolic, that if they knock this down... they can basically do any unconstitutional thing they want -- that in and of itself it's not important; what's important is that the pres is above the law.

Is that it????

Think of Political and Civic Opposition to this President..

That is what this is all about.

11. Except that those people are not in power --
So why the urgency? OK, so they spy on John Kerry: what can they really gain from it?

I mean, I think they do spy on political opponents, but their desperation to do these wiretaps seems extreme, even considering that...

17. Yeah, yeah. Gotcha.
It still feels like something very specific to me, though. They want to do a SPECIFIC thing very important -- vital! -- to their agenda. Spying on a bunch of hippies is great, but not exactly it. (All you can get from spying is information -- since when have they ever needed or used information? (Okay, maybe to blackmail!))

My best guess is that they see this is the first step towards breaking down any kind of limits on the presidency. He KNOWS he's committed war crimes. By staking out this territory -- confirming that the limits in the Constitution do not apply -- he frees himself up to do all that other bad shit that he ALREADY did. I think this is about retroactively legalizing some bad shit that already happened.

Once they have the freedom to wiretap in the bag -- pretty much anything else he wants to do can follow the same precedent.

The desperation here is pretty intense.

Rome was not built in one day...

Think of it in this completely ridiculous context:

Circa 1977:

The hit show M*A*S*H, already a maverick in its writing and dramatic interpretations, broke new ground by airing an episode that allowed Alan Alda to use the phrase "you son-of-a-bitch."

Many years go by:

Turn on any prime time show today and check out the language they use without pause...

Not a knock on MASH, I love the show... Just an example of how big things often start off tiny...

27. maybe they have to legitimize it retroactively
before Fitzgerald finds out they've done it to someone connected to the Plame case? 'Cause if an honest bulldog like Fitzgerald gets his teeth in something like this, game over. Also, they need to stuff this 'illegal spying' story back in the box before it affects the '06 elections. Good luck on that one. They may actually be making things worse by trying to sell this issue so hard.

29. Exactly, and also consider that....
the president and his administration these days represent multi-national interests which often run counter to the interests of the average American. I know its hard for people to accept the idea that American democracy is in great danger of being overrun, but we'd better start looking at these issues and don't let fear of al-Qaeda allow us to sell out our liberty.

stupid as he seems to think they are? I know very few Republicans but it seems to me even the Repubs I know are upset about this wiretapping business. Maybe the nutcase thugs in Washington think they can sweep this all under the rug but I think this administration has done enough damage that even the sheeple aren't going to buy his excuses. Fingers crossed I am not mistaken!

So we have to stop them from stealing elections!

try to make Bin Laden's statements seem similar to the statements of predominant Democrats like Michael Moore, Howard Dean, etc..

So far, I have heard Chris Wallace, Tucker Carlson, Chris Matthews, and Ken Mehlman say this almost verbatim to each other's statements..

18. I feel I must stress the importance of one of my points:
• Speak to your conservative friends and acquaintances. Remind them of their irreplaceable and inherent rights under the Constitution.

In all honesty, I have many loved ones, friends, and neighbors who are Republicans. Further, I strongly believe that my "loved ones" here at the DU also have many conservative friends and family.

In spite of my opposition to this President, this GOP, the large majority this Republican Senate and this House, what I do not believe is that typical every-day Republican citizens are to be classified and placed in the same reprehensible class of the afore mentioned people.

Rather, they are victims just like you and I. The difference is that many are not aware of the gravity of the President's criminal agenda. Worse, the following statement summarizes my opinion on why they are seem unwilling to oppose this President:

"People don't like to be lied to. Moreover, people abhor ADMITTING to themselves and others that they were duped."

That is why it is so important to discuss the Constitutional First and Fourth Amendment rights of every citizen with your conservative friends. It is not a political issue. It is a CONSTITUTIONAL issue.

Don't think "convert the heathens" here. "Think enlighten the victims of a conspiracy."

We have come to a point where the opposition to this President is the duty of all Americans, despite their political affiliations. The days of the Brown Shirts has returned. All are in peril.

25. talking and persuading
I wrote my letter to the editor and have written my senators. What we must also do is talk with people, make them aware of the stakes. How to explain unitary executive power in soundbites? Give this a try:

George Bush believes that he is commander in chief of everyone, not just the military. And, as commander-in-chief, he believes he alone is responsible for interpreting the law.

People seem to get that. It's simple and accurate. And, in their gut, people know that's not the United States they were taught about.
