"I don't think anybody anticipated the breech of the levees." Bush, on "Good Morning America", six days after repeated warnings from experts about the scope of damage expected from Katrina, Sept. 1, 2005.
"The good news is - and it's hard for some to see it now - that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house - he's lost his entire house - there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch." (The White House, "President Arrives in Alabama, Briefed on Hurricane Katrina," Sept. 2, 2005.)
"I believe that the great city of New Orleans will rise again and be a greater city of New Orleans. I believe the town where I used to come, from Houston, Texas, to enjoy myself - occasionally too much - will be that very same town, that it will be a better place to come to. That's what I believe." (MediaChannel, "In Bush's World, PR Equals Action," Simon Dumenco, Sept. 13, 2005.)
"The issues of the levees breaking and the catastrophic events that happened in New Orleans are the equivalent, in my view, of a terrorist attack by Mother Nature overlaid on a natural disaster." Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen, the top federal official in charge of recovery efforts in New Orleans, on Hurricane Katrina. Sept. 21, 2005
=======
As we come to the first anniversary of Katrina bodies are still being found in New Orleans. Refugees are still housed in Houston. Trailers are still stored in Arkansas. Insurance companies are still denying claims on technicalities.
If this is how the Republican controlled government handles a "terrorist attack" that they had days if not weeks to prepare for and a year to recover from, how safe do you feel?
