How many bike commuters do we have
I save about $100 a month riding my bike to work. But, I don't do it for that. I do it because these fat cats aren't going to use my money to build their next summer home. I'm not putting any privileged little brats through Harvard with my truck.

Anyone else?

1. I run (just barely) a small biz from my home. Partly for the reasons
you mentioned.

2. Yes, me and...
my husband. We use the car most sparingly and bike or walk everywhere.

We have been doing this for years. Way back then, people used to honk (nastily!) -- not any more!!

4. You rock
Not just jumping on the bandwagon, but saving gas for years.

Nice! I hope to say the same in a few years.

6. Two words: Baby wipe
That's what I do. But, I have the luxury of working in a warehouse.

You gotta do what you gotta do. I've worked in offices so I understand how it is.

19. I work as a hairstylist. I have my arm pits in peoples' faces all day.
I just think I need to shower between bike riding and any personal service.

Do you have any carpooling or public transportation options?

35. No to both.
But I only have a 15 minute drive. I work very odd hours so it's better for me to just drive. If I did some other type of work I would bike.

I used to be a bike messenger downtown years ago when I was a kid and loved it, except in the pouring rain...

10. Too hot. Toronto was okay all year round. Okay a few days in winter...
I had to hoof it or ride transport, but other than that, I was on my bike.

11. When my house sells and I move to town I can bike or bus almost everywhere
My 17 YO son that just started college has stated that he doesn't want a car and when he got his first job this summer bought a "beach cruiser" to ride when he is in town. The colleges here in Chico, CA have a great bus system which is included in student fees.

Now let's just hope my house sells...

12. A couple of times a week
I started it in April and love it. It's great exercise and I don't line the pockets of the oil companies. I still drive once or twice a week and also take the bus occasionally.

15. Yes! I rode a mountain bike UP the Crescent Trail..
and it nearly killed me every time. Folks said my bike - and my backpack - were too heavy.

24. Are you riding flat bars?
I switched a year or two ago to riser bars and a shorter stem.

It's a little more clunky on the single track, but I am much more comfortable.

14. I use to - things are not layed out in a way
where it would be safe anymore - in fact I would probably be killed in a month riding my bike to work now, but I still ride 300 miles per week on the bike trails for racing fitness:evilgrin: - Too bad the bike trails don't coincide with my work commute.

Keep on riding

16. Been in the saddle for years
Not only commuting, but hauling groceries. When I moved recently, I loaded my horse, carrying things to the new flat while waiting for the movers. Plus, wherever I go, it's also recreation.

After spending a year trekking (New Zealand, Aussie and Europe), I realized I could live without a car.

20. I bike everywhere except in winter
when I walk or use public transport.

Unfortunately I was run over by a pedestrian a few weeks ago and ended up spending the weekend in hospital with a broken wrist. The cast is supposed to come off on Sept 8. I can't wait to get back on my back.

Besides the exercice, the money I save allows me to take a few weeks holiday in South America during the winter.

31. He walked into the street from between two big cars
without checking for traffic. There was no way I could see him before it was too late. BTW this is the 4th time this happened to me but the 1. one with damage, other than scratches.

I have to find something to put on my bike which makes continous noise.

32. Yes, but was your bike ok?
In all seriousness I'm sorry to hear about your wrist.

I use a bell, but I guess you have to see them coming for that to work. Unfortunately, any constant noise maker will drive you nuts if you use it for long. But, I've heard of people using bear bells.

REI has one:

21. I bike on a daily basis, year round, rain, snow or shine --
but it is, admittedly, only a ten minute ride. And to get to my secondary job, about 7 miles away, I do have to drive - just don't have time to get from one to the other, and riding home in Raleigh at midnight is close to suicide.

But I do what i can.

27. We bike to work almost every day
Here in good old Filthydelphia.

Only take the car out on weekends when we need to go to Jersey to buy wine or for a long trip to Canada.

The money we save on parking, gas, etc, goes towards our vacations.

30. I work more than 20 miles away
with no safe access and primarily the 4 to midnight shift, so it's really not feasible.

But, I do all my errands on my bike and ride to yoga on Sunday mornings.

I probably use only three tanks of gas a month. My husband takes public transportation and we only live about 1.5 miles from the station so he uses even less.
