Are you really fiscally conservative?

Do you believe in low taxes, especially for the rich, and a small central government that does nothing to help people or provide any kind of services? Do you believe that hospitals and fire departments and police departments function best when they are run for profit, and not propped up by taxpayers?

Because that's the honest definition of a fiscal conservative.

Me?

I'm fiscally liberal, and I'm not afraid to say so. I believe in a strong centralized government that uses a progressive income tax which will demand that those who have the most give more, because they can afford it and they owe their success to the society that supports them. I believe that this central government not only could, but should provide necessary services for people such as welfare when needed to deserving families and quality health care and actual social security so it's citizens won't have to work into their seventies.

And I don't belive in deficit spending. No fiscal liberal does.


This myth of the "fiscal conservative" being some kind of noble feat to aspire to started when Bush started spending out of control and giving handouts to the rich. So conservatives revolted, and said that he wasn't a "true conservative". In fact, some went as far as to say he was a liberal in his economic policy.

And now, because of this, we have people like John Dean and Lou Dobbs pining for "true conservatives", and lamenting how conservatism has been hijacked and corrupted.

Its been so successful of a talking point that it has even made some liberals start longing for these "true conservatives", at the expense of their own values.
