but we're not supposed to do so even though it's just an old arabic word. It's because it fell into disrepute in usage in South Africa in the days of apartheid and even before that.
It's a bit like the n word which in the 1700's was just descriptive of someone who was black and so looked like a Niger <from Niger>. That was originally spelt niger - second n was added to suit english spelling. That in turn is also why aluminium was spelt as such - to suit our langauge.

#1 is President Assad of Syria, he's Muslim.
#2 is a Sikh, not Muslim.
#3 is standing in front of vaguely Arabic architecture of some kind (arched door and pattern), but he reminds me a little bit of The Rock :shrug:

#9 could well be Indonesian, and if so, he's probably Muslim

The whole idea is stupid; based on the idea that a Muslim is traveling under his own name (has figured a way around the ID issues) and looks like the person's stereotype of "Arab."

There are converts, too, like the shoe-bomber. And the top two pics I would not have guessed they were Muslims. Would have had to go by their names, but some of the names don't stick out. Without an "al" they might be anything.

And then, even if they had stopped them and scrutinized them, it would not mean they would notice anything. Maybe the box cutters, but those were allowed on then. What could they have that would make it of any use even if they did scrutinize them more?

their names - not that it would be perfect but it would be closer than just looking at them personally. Though of course, they would have to be traveling under their real names, which worked on 911 but now they would presumably be smart enough to find a way to travel under a name that wouldn't fit the usual Muslim pattern.
