US Complicit In Iran's Development Of Nuclear Capabilities (Chicago Trib)
U.S. Cold War gift: Iran nuclear plant
Now cited as evidence of weapons activity, facility was provided to shah's government

By Sam Roe
Tribune staff reporter
Published August 24, 2006

In the heart of Tehran sits one of Iran's most important nuclear facilities, a dome-shaped building where scientists have conducted secret experiments that could help the country build atomic bombs. It was provided to the Iranians by the United States.

The Tehran Research Reactor represents a little-known aspect of the international uproar over the country's alleged weapons program. Not only did the U.S. provide the reactor in the 1960s as part of a Cold War strategy, America also supplied the weapons-grade uranium needed to power the facility--fuel that remains in Iran and could be used to help make nuclear arms.

As the U.S. and other countries wrestle with Iran's refusal this week to curb its nuclear capabilities, an examination of the Tehran facility sheds light on the degree to which the United States has been complicit in Iran developing those capabilities.

1. Just like we armed Saddam (we all recall the infamous photo w rumsfeld)
The neocons create the monsters then profit off the military efforts needed to take them out.

5. And at the same time the U.S. was doing this--proliferating nuclear
technology--the U.S./Israel had been busy destroying Iran's democracy (in 1954) and installing the horrible Shah of Iran, who inflicted 25 years of torture and oppression on the Iranian people.

What I am hoping is that Israel will at last wake up to its untenable position in the Middle East--upstart medieval fortress, bristling with armaments, surrounded by hostile neighbors--apologize to the Iranian people for its part in the overthrow of their democracy, and join with Iran to evict the Bush Cartel from the Middle East.

Is she dreaming? Yes! Dreaming peace. A radical idea is needed. Israel's only friend, the Bush junta--the most hated regime on earth--is going down. They've bankrupted the U.S. and destroyed it as a super-power, in their vampire pursuit of the last oil reserves. Israel will go down with them, if it doesn't create a new paradigm for itself, as a partner with its neighbors in regional security and pursuit of the common good of all Middle Eastern peoples. How can Israel do this? By growing up as as a country, getting out of the upstart/US tool mode, and creating ITS OWN region-oriented foreign policy--by dramatically turning around and offering a hand of friendship to the Iranian people, the most potentially progressive people among Israel's neighbors, whose growth was stunted by the west with Israel in complicity. The Iranians fear Iraq. They also fear nuke-powered Pakistan (on their border). As well as fearing Israel and the Bush junta. And they have reason to be afraid. What if Israel offered nuke umbrella protection to the Iranian people? By all reasonable estimates, Iran is far from having nukes. And they are deeply afraid, on all sides.

Think peace. Think how it could happen. Dream peace.
